Subject: 1/2 IM Run Question
Here's a newbie question for all of you...

I am doing my first 1/2 IM in Sept (yes, that sound is my teeth chattering). I built up my long run using headphones, which is a first for me in any kind of training. Since the batteries were dead today I did a long run without them and was bored, and seemed to focus more on the pains of running 13+ miles.

I know the answer, but I'd like to ask anyway...would I look like a complete dork bringing my headphones to the 1/2 IM for the run? And, of course, is it safe to run (shuffle in my case) in a group setting with the headphones? The answers are likely YES you'd look like a DORK and NO...it is NOT SAFE, but maybe you'll surprise me?
Thanks.

During a race the route is usually closed so the safety factor isn't really an issue. Some organizers don't allow them so you might want to check it.

Personally I cannot see ruining a perfectly good run with headphones and music, but that's just me

I second above...check with the Race Directors.  My last HIM headphones were not allowed anywhere on the course and the USAT officials were patrolling the run course and giving out penalties for it...

Headphones ar verbotten by the USAT:

Unauthorized Accessories. No participant shall, at any time during the event, use or wear a hard cast, headset, radio or any other item deemed dangerous by the Head Referee. Any violation of this Section shall result in a variable time penalty.

Go cold turkey my man. I used to run with a MP3 player, but quit when I decided the sounds of the woods were more interesting. Forget safety, don't miss what is going on around you. You will really be surprised what you can hear!

Try a few more runs without the headphones. Since I ditched the mp3 player, I've found that I'm much more attuned to my effort level and being able to gauging my pace based on it.

if the 1/2 IM you are competing in is a USAT then, as mentioned above, you'll get a penalty if caught. better be prepared to run without the player.

I can't yet even imagine training without music. I am sure it takes getting used to but right now I am so addicted to my MP3. One day I will try going cold turkey but I am not ready yet.

Beyond the penalties, running in a race w/ headphones is not corteous to other runners, IMHO.

It's one thing when you're on you're own, but when you're in a pack of other runners you need to be alert to what's going on around you. Granted, in a half IM, you're not going to experience a crowd of runners like you would at a large road race.

I don't get bored riding or running, but swimming in a pool, man, do I get bored....counting the laps....only fix for that: open water swimming...I don't use music, I like to tune in to my body and I have my Garmin Forerunner to entertain me ;-) Good luck on the HIM, hell of a goal!

During the race you will likely have a lot more adrenaline going, plus all the people around you, people at the aid stations, spectators cheering you on, etc., so the "boredom" of running solo should disappear.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I'll have to practice some of the zen techniques described and become "one" with the environment. Somewhere during this race I may become "one" with the ditch as a pile of sweaty garbage. :-)

I knew it was probably not a great idea to bring them.
