Subject: Replace Helmet???
I was at my LBS the other day and they suggested replacing your helmet every couple of years. Is that necessary or were they looking for a sale?

One reason to replace your helmet every couple years is b/c technology make possible improvements by providing new materials, better designs, etc.
I have a helmet that is over 5 yrs old, it has never been on an accident, it is fine as far as I am concerned. This year I decided to splurge an get something nicer than my mushroom head I paid around same price (just a little more considering inflation) but it fits much better, it is lighter, and it has better ventilation than my old helmet... Plus the design brings me to the millenium and takes me out of the 90's
Just a thought....

all of that makes sense. the lbs was saying that your sweat can cause the padding to lose its ability to do its job or detiorate (sp?). I wasnt so sure i was buying that story.

That's true...I think. Well it isn't the only time that I've heard that happening and it sounds plausable. I've wrecked some gloves because I neglected to wash them often, and that suff in the helmet is just high tech styrofoam. Just get a new helmet (like the LG rocket)

You talked me into it. hmmm, tri shopping, never a cheap endeavor. I think it is time for everyone's favorite game! Credit Card Lottery! Will it be the Discover? Maybe the Visa? What about the MasterCard. Only time will tell!

Check for last year designs. They are usually on sale. I think Nashbar has a sale on helmets going now.

I was going to bring this up, glad someone else started it.

I've had my Giro basic (don't know what the name was ) $32 in 2003.   Been ok, never crashed so it hasn't really been tested.  But it smells when the sweat runs down my face.   I've taken it into the shower with me and scrubbed it.    But the sweat stink has been absorbed...oh well.

So the question is to go to the next level.  Do the Credit card lottery and go with what type of helmet.  And will the $100 plus model really make a difference as compared to the $60-90 range.  I know I will go up in price but how far???

Any input on other brands beside Giro.

I just bought a Bell racer r helmet for $90 on sale and it was worth the $$. The hard shell is in-molded/ bonded to the styro vs my old helmet hard shell was just taped (barely) on. It is also lighter, is way more comfortable and the ventilation is great. For the record the debit card won the lottery. It seems like now is the season for gear sales.

Even though you have never crashed on the thing doesn't mean that it isn't cracked internally. throwing it around in transition or dropping it over the years will weaken the structure. I have also read that the foam used does deteriorate over time, an age thing. Besides the helmet you may have, may not meet the fashion nazi standards. Come on you know who you are!!!!!

For the sake of a few bucks it is protecting the most important part of your body. Well it is for some of us, not necessarily including myself in that group. LOL

Plus this isn't like replacing something you wear only on the weekends...a good helmet you use EVERY DAY, and is therefor well worth the dosh.

I know you are supposed to replace your helmet if you are in a crash. What about after dropping it? I've had my helmet about 2 years. I've dropped it a few times on cement - in parking lots, etc. Should I replace it?
