Subject: HIM Nutrition Advice

Just looking for any nutrition tips or plans that anyone follows for a HIM distance.  I know this question is generic and that is really depends on how your body reacts to certain items.  That is why I would like to stay all "liquid" and keep it simple for my race and see if anyone has any advice/pointers for hydration and calorie intake?  I plan to stay away from GU's, gels, shot blocks, etc. I guess my main concern is the bike.  I have room for an aero bottle and two rear bottles of fluid.  There of course will be water bottle stations so should I carry bottles in all three spots on my bike or ultilize the hand outs while I ride?  I hear those bottle can weigh your bike down?

As I recall, your race is this weekend... right?

I guess I'm a little disturbed (? maybe not the word for it?) that you are just now thinking about nutrition with a race only days away. Hum. I maybe I'm wrong.

Everyone is different. Yeah.

I eat food, do gels, do liquid nutrition, etc. Why do you not want to do gels, etc. Those are forms of liquid nutrition- BTW. A bit more solid, but they disgest quickly and provide a quick carb fix.

Aim for around 250 calories on the bike, per hour and you should be OK. I'm guessing. Take it in however you please.

Thanks for the info!I do have a plan I have been following but always like to see what everyone else is doing. I have read that with the HIM distance that people often over think there nutrition at that distance? I guess it is up to the personal preference?Heck, I am more concerned about my foot now but it feels a little better after sitting in the jacuzzi this afternoon. I will crawl if I need to!Thanks again for all the advice! Tommy

I'm doing solids as I found out I have to.....(this is my first race of this distance and in training, I couldn't get thru without some solid food on the bike).

What I'm doing for LoneStar....

Breakfast of powerbar
Gu Rocktane before swim
Gu after swim in T1
2 powerbars on bike (1/3 every 30 minutes)....I have them opened and wrapped on my handlebar underneath my aerobar for easy access and no trying to open while cruising at 17mph
Gu in T2
Gu every other loop on run (maybe some fruit toward the end of run)

Pizza, beer, sausage, more pizza, ice cream, and taco bell post race.........

it really depends a lot on how hard you go, the environmental factors, and your fitness level.

to me, a HIM is pretty serious business w the nutrition. you can definitely cramp/bonk on the run if you aren't careful during the bike phase....

personally I make sure I take in adequate electrolytes, calories on both bike and run. I like Perpetuem for liquid calories, plus GUs/Blocks..

since you are days away, I don't want to recommend anything other than what you have been training with.

whatever you practiced with....don't look too much at what others do...that is how you get burned....

as far as overthinking it...it depends, guys/gals going sub 5 hrs have different demands then 6.5 hr....70.3 distance starts getting up there.  even 5 hr race is a decent amount for the body to be kept in motion. 

personally i take very little nutrition and live off a course in a half iron event.  i hate trying to come up with a big nutrition plan.  gel flask, gatorade and water...tha tis how i train that is how i race.

Pre race is oat meal, banana, and 16 oz of coconut water(high in Potassium). Then hydrate with a Perpetuem loaded(2 scoops) with 24oz water.

Bike: Two 24oz bottles of 2 scoops Perpetuem, 1 scoop endurolytes, and water.  Then I will have to pick up a bottle at an aid station for anything more.

Run: Gels at out of T2, 4.5 miles, and 9 miles.  Drinking sports drink at each aid station for the first 9 miles.  The last 4 miles of the run, either I got it or not.

As far as the 'what', as others said, do whatever you did in training.

As far as the bottles, my opinion is that the best setup (assuming you are drinking both sports drink and water) is one bottle on the aero bars and one on the downtube or seat tube.  If you are just drinking water, then just one bottle on the aero bars would be my preference, although some bottles on some downtubes or seat tubes have been shown in improve aerodynamics, so that's definitely an option as well.

In general, and especially if it is a warm day, WATER, WATER, and MORE WATER.  As a bonk victim at the HIM distance myself, I can't stress the importance of this enough.  If you're going all liquid, be careful if you're counting on concentrated formulas.  Sports drinks are often optimized in terms of concentration for max efficiency in digesting carbs, so if you concentrating, be sure you're drinking lots of water on the side.  All liquid doesn't mean you won't get dehydrated.  Also, sports drinks (Gatorate, IM Perform, etc.) are not necessarily going to keep you hydrated - you still need water throughout.

Every situation and every athlete is different, as everyone above has stressed, so it's hard to give you specific advice.  But this is one tidbit that is relatively universal, IMHO.

I started doing HIMs with about 350 calories an hour and felt like hell during the runs.

I've gone to three bottles, one with two scoops of HEED, one with two scoops of Perpetuem and another with two scoops of Perpetuem. That's about 250ish calories an hour. Then two cups of either water or HEED per aid station on the run. I dropped an hour and a half on my HIM by taking in fewer calories.

Oh, read this for your next one later in the year. Do not change what you've been training with.

My advice that I think isn't mentioned often but could help a lot of people is this: 

For the first 10-20 minutes of the run, stick to just water. It takes a little while for your body (and stomach) to get used to the higher heart rate you'll have on the run. Rather than loading it up on calories that your stomach can't take in right away, just suck in some water to dilute whatever is left in there from the bike and help it go down easier.

After the first 10-20 minutes of the run, don't play catchup. Just stick to whatever your normal half marathon nutrition plan. I do water at every aid station and 50 calories about every 20-30 minutes.

Not for your race this weekend (too late to change nutrition), but in the future if you plan to still stick with all liquid, Infinit Nutrition has worked well for me in the past. You can completely customize your drink which is designed to be your entire nutrition, including electrolytes, carbs, protein, etc.

They help you by guiding you through a series of questions (what distance are you training for, do you have GI issues, sweat rate, etc.) and present you with a custom formula you can adjust - flavor, flavor strength, caffeine, up the calories, etc.

I agree with Jamie's advice to stick with water at the start of the run. 

I will add some advice someone told me that has helped me: don't take in anything during the last 10 minutes of the bike. 

Before I started following that rule I was never certain how I was going to feel during the run.  Now I can be relatively certain that I won't have any sloshing stomach problems if I cut myself off before the end of the bike.

See, when I start my half mary in a HIM... I always do my usual half mary nutrition. Meaning: I don't start taking in calories until 30-45 minutes in (I take 15 minutes per gel packet). If you have good nutrition on bike, you shouldn't have to start dumping calories in the minute you start the run.
