Total Time = 1h 14m 40s
Overall Rank = 91/420
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 15/41
Pre-race routine:

DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE. Up at 3:40 to get to Kemah. I think I overcompensated from last year, as I had quite a bit of stand-around time before the start.
Event warmup:

Nothing. Would have liked to get in the water a little before swim start, but that's not possible at this venue.
Swim
  • 11m 58s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Okay for the first race of the year, but certainly shows a lot of room for improvement. I got caught in the scrum for the first half of the swim, and never really felt things settled down.
What would you do differently?:

Start futher to the right to get out of the crowd.
Transition 1
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

Long run from the beach to transition. Wet Suit Strippers were excellent.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing....but the fast guys picked up a minute on me in T1.
Bike
  • 34m 57s
  • 12 miles
  • 20.60 mile/hr
Comments:

I tried to put out a medium-high level of effort. I felt this was a good strong bike for me.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on more consistent pacing. Would have liked to have one bottle along for an end-of-ride drink. This ride was closer to 12.5-mil than 12-mi. I slipped my feet out of my shows a little before 12 to be ready for T2 and ended up riding for quite aways with my feet on top of the shoes.
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

Smooth...no real issues, but I still give away 45-seconds here compared to the fast guys.
Run
  • 23m 4s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Solid run for me. Took about a half mile to get into stride, then hit a pretty good pace. Started to slack off the last 1/4 mile or so, and had a few people pass me at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Hold pace and maintain to the end.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim and transition work should let me pick up 3 or 4 minutes

Event comments:

Good race to kick off the season. It was well organized, but the swim start was a little chaotic, and the lady trying to coordinate things really needed a PA system as it was pretty impossible to hear her. Also, time between waves was a little too tight. I was in the back of the chute, and just barely made it to the start line when my wave took off. I'm sure some of the stragglers got caught unaware!
