Comments: Lined up mid pack with Mike, Dud and Kara a little further back. I had in the back of my mind that I wanted to do some HM pacing for my upcoming race, but the courses aren't real similar so wasn't sure if that would work out or not. I went out at a comfortably challenge pace in the upper 7's and figured if I could keep right around an 8 - 8:10 pace I would be good. I found a group of runners, along with some nice pace booty, running the pace I was looking for so that helped. We would exchage positions on the up hills and down hills and run along on the rare flat sections. About the only excitement was about the 5 mile mark I was coming up a hill just about to pass Heather, although I didn't know it was her until I passed her. But about this time on the opposite side of the road there was a pair of deer in a dead run, obviously much faster than me. About the top of the hill, they made a hard left across the road right in front of us! Second time in 2 days that I had deer run in front of me! Settled back into the desired pace, focusing on consistent splits and took it to the finish. And although I wouldn't consider this a race rehearsal, it did give me the confidence that I may be able to get my desired results at the half. What would you do differently?: Nothing Post race
Warm down: Grabbed a gut bomb (hot dog) and some water. When Mike came in he and I headed to the car for some dry/warm clothes and went back to wait for Dud and Kara. It was her first race at that distance and Dud was nice enough to pace her in for a great first time finish. Had another gut bomb and some cookies with those 2 and headed home. What limited your ability to perform faster: The usual, I am getting my weight down a little at a time, but still not at fast guy level. My run fitness is getting strong so when the weight does get there I think I will be happy. Event comments: Yellow Jacket does a good job. They are pros at putting these things on. Quick breakfast waiting for my BIL Mike, then we drove over to Dud's house to pick him and Kara up to driver to the race.
Just walking to registration, the rest room the car and finally to the start. Really wasn't sure how the race was going to play out as it was a late decision to even participate and it is a fairly hilly course. So I wasn't too concerned about a quality warm up. I was a bit concerned on how to dress, but shorts, long sleeve shirt over short sleeve with hat and gloves turned out to be a pretty good decision.
