I was hoping this would be my first ironman distance tri.  I'm 2 months post rotator cuff surgery and haven't been cleared to swim yet.  I'm keeping my figures crossed the doctor will clear me this month. The good news is my wife still has the hotel held.

I did the IM distance AB last year. It was quite lonely on the course as there aren't that many athletes.

Bike course is great and flat...aid stations are short with only 2-3 folks sometimes only 2 working them so you need to slow down more than in a WTC race.

You can drive to swim start. That was not clear in the material I got before the race. They have a shuttle but if you have family coming with have them drive you down. My husband and I took the shuttle and he had no good way to get back to the HS and our car so he walked through a very questionable part of town. Another athlete's spouse picked him up and dropped him back off at the HS.

If I'm healthy and race doesn't conflict with family activities I plan to do the AB again this year.

I maybe there this year. I am doing IMCDA next month but think I may want another one this year. Rev 3 Cedar point or this one might work well.

I've never done Chessieman, but have done Eagleman twice (much of the same bike leg).  Two years ago Eagleman's swim wasn't too bad, but last year was fairly choppy (it's in the Choptank river, after all).  The bike can get windy, but like anything can depend on the day.  For both races I did, the wind was 10-15mph.  I've ridden out on the MD eastern shore before, though, where it's in the 20-30 range, and that can be tough.

We've stayed in Easton before, it's about 20min away, but traffic will be very light from Easton to Cambridge on race morning.

Regarding, the wind, my only advice is to practice in a windy area.  My wife and I did IM Florida last November, so went out to the Maryland Eastern Shore a lot to "simulate" the flat windy course of Florida.  I'm not sure where you live, but I'd try to find the flattest, windiest area you can find.

Good luck!

So its about 3 Months away and its really quiet on the official Chesapeakman thread.....haha...

So where do we stand in trainning and completiong the event are we nervous, confident, in different.  Im getting more nervous as the time approaches (first IM), its border line excitment and nervous all combined into one when I think about it..I cant imagine what I will feel when the day arrives....what are your time goals?

Mine is just finish under the 17 hour mark

Though to myself im saying under 12Hours...

Chessieman threads usually are pretty quiet every year haha, but dont let it derail you, its a really fun race. To the folks that were talking about the swim and bike, the swim can be choppy it really just depends on the day, but its not terrible. The bike is windy, always.

As mentioned, the swim start and bike end are at two different locations. So the day before you drop your bike off at the swim start, then in the morning you drive to the bike end/run start area and park, drop off your bags and catch a shuttle to the swim start.

It does get lonely at times on the bike so be prepared for not seeing another person for awhile. The people that run the race and all the volunteers are really awesome though and make the race worth it.

Oh if there is anyone doing the Aqua Velo as a tune up for a late year IM and you want to do a little short run after the bike, be prepared for some weird looks as you run the opposite way of the run course lol.

I'm thinking about doing the aquavelo as a race rehearsal for Kona.  It's only two weeks out, though, and I'd prefer to do it three weeks out.  Hmmm.

I have not signed up yet but I am seriously thinking about it. I was going to take the year off from IM but I am getting that feeling again.

In the past my Eagleman experiences have been mixed with weather (nice to brutally hot and humid). Is this time of year typically cooler then the summer months?

Anyone have any general thoughts?

I did this race 5 years ago. I'm glad to see it's still up and running. It was a good first (an only, for me) iron distance; the aid stations on the run were well-stocked and friendly. The water is a little jellyfishy, but nothing too scary.

Yes, the bike is windy, just think of it as invisible hills. Aid stations well-placed.

If you like low-key races, this is a great one. Maybe things have changed, but the atmosphere was very relaxed - they didn't mind my hubby riding his fixie beside me for a couple miles of the run, I saw several people with family running them along.

The only thing I would change is the DJ - no joke, they were playing Yanni when I crossed the finish line. At least give me St Elmo's Fire :p

All in all, I'm glad to see several of you doing this as a first iron!

Training was going well, but I've got a nagging ankle injury (seeing a specialist in a week).  First child is due in 2.5 weeks, so who knows what will happen to my training the next month Laughing .  So far, my race season has gone great though...looking forward to the race.

just registered today.

training going well - not nearly enough - but going well.

I was in Europe for past 2 weeks = no riding or swimming at all. Swam today for first time, did 1.5 miles in 40 minutes, it was tough to get through.

Doing a 50 mile ride and 6 mile run tomorrow morning. Sunday have the Merrel Mud Run in Philly, doign the 5K with the wife, should be fun.

Now where am I going to stay???
