I have a question for the more experienced triathletes participating in the race.
Aero helmet...a plus or a non-issue on such a short course?

You'll be faster with an aero helmet. How much is debatable.

I would ask why you wouldn't wear one? Just as easy to get on and off...it's just as comfortable....I don't see any down side to wearing one.

That is a good point. Mostly a look thing, was concerned about being the only one with an aero helmet.....

There will be tons of people with aero helmets...I wouldn't worry about that.

Encinitas Tri attracts a really fast field...so there will be lots of people with all the aero goodies.

train with it on a 20K bike route of yours and see if it helps...its probably more mental than anything at that distance

I'm in!

So tell me about the current? I've done a fair amount of OWS, including at Avila Bay, but have never swam at an unprotected beach like Encinitas. Friends tell me there's a North-South current with a West facing beach and breakers that come straight in. I swim a 1:30 pace in good conditions, 1:45 in rougher water. How far upstream do we aim to make the turns at the buoys?

I raced it last year and the current was S-N.  We entered the water about 50m south of the beeline to the buoy.  You'll get to see the pros and AG waves go off and judge where to enter from that.
