Pre-race routine:

Woke up early(4am) feeling sick to my stomach from dinner the night before. We packed up and got on the road right away without having eaten anything. Took about an hour to get there. I had a bottle of gatorade/radeday starting at 530 and a gu right before the start. We prepped the bikes, put them in transition and moved to the bathroom line!
Event warmup:

I fit in about a 1 mile warm up. My stomach was still a little unsettled, and I didn't want to push much more than that. I fit in several pick-ups at race pace.
Run
  • 18m
  • 3 miles
  • 06m  min/mile
Comments:

I started off pretty fast and led the first half mile until the first turn arrived and I went the wrong direction. After turning around I had to sprint to catch up to the lead group, and it took me 2 more wrong turns to finally just sit back and let others lead. I spent at least 30 seconds going the wrong direction. I ran surprisingly well considering my lack of run training. I held back a little bit so I would have something for the bike. I was the second finisher on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Let someone else lead the run so that I didn't get lost.
Transition 1
  • 00m 20s
Comments:

Very quick transition. I passed the guy in front of me in transition and was the first one out on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Practice a flying mount. I took my time so everything would go smoothly, but I really have a lot of room for improvement.

Comments:

I really wanted to nail the bike, but it didn't start off good. I could not get my feet into my shoes to save my life. I was actually passed by two people in the first mile while I struggled to get my shoes on. I finally got them on enough to pedal and quickly passed the two folks who passed me. I really felt good on the bike and executed well. I stayed aero and tucked in, I rode hard and cornered very well. Leading the entire way was pretty fun too. I was disappointed by my power output, but the most important thing is that I was efficient. No drinking on the bike. I missed the final turn and almost fell when I braked too fast and lost traction. I got passed in the last 1/2 mile by a good friend you put down the fastest bike split of the day.
What would you do differently?:

Practice, practice, practice mounting and getting my feet into my shoes.
Transition 2
  • 00m 27s
Comments:

Another fast transition. I left transition at the same time as the guy who finished ahead of me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 19m 32s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

This almost turned out very badly. I retook the lead immediately on the run, but my calves and hamstrings were starting to twitch and I could feel them getting ready to cramp very badly. I had no choice but to hold back in the first mile to see if I could work them out. During that time I got passed by the guy who finished first for the first run, and I didn't think I'd get a chance to catch him because he was a strong runner. I kept him in sight and just focused on keeping my turnover high. Finally, my legs seemed to calm down and somehow I was still within striking distance of the guy in front of me. I picked it up a bit and passed him a little over a mile from the finish. He stayed right behind me for a bit, but with less than a mile left, there was no way I was going to let myself get beat. At about half a mile left, I went all out and put about 20 seconds between us during that stretch. It was a great feeling running down the finishing chute as the winner!
What would you do differently?:

Not sure if I needed to hold back on the bike to prevent the cramps, but I don't think I would have done anything differently.
Post race
Warm down:

None, I stayed at the finish line and cheered. I cool down run would have been a better idea.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Definitely run fitness and some technical execution on T1, mounting and getting into shoes. Maybe should have held back a little on the first run.

Event comments:

For an inaugural race, this was really well done. It was fun and well supported with volunteers and police support. Roads were very safe, which is always the important thing. My only area for improvement is that the course was not clearly marked and I got off course 4 times throughout the short race, which definitely cost me some time.

I think your signature line is the perfect response to that!  "Train smart, race hard, and results will take care of themselves."

I was tempted, but the drive would really cut into my morning.  I'm swimming on my own at the LA fitness in Spring.  I have to be in the office before 7am, so every minute counts!
