I just did my second ride on my road bike.  Still getting used to the clipless pedals.  I made my husband come out with me to take a picture of me on my bike.  About 10 seconds after telling him I wasn't going to fall down for a picture, I clipped in on one side and then fell to that side.

Deb's fall

Have I paid my dues, or am I bound to have another, more public and embarrassing fall?

There might be a couple more, but it sounds like you've got a good attitude about it!  Maybe it's a rite of passage, but if you just get through this, you'll get used to it quickly!

The only time I've ever fallen like that is right after saying I hadn't fallen yet.  I think it's just karma keeping our egos in check.  Once you get used to it, there really isn't much to it.  I find that being consistent in which foot you unclip helps a lot.  I agree that it is a right of passage.  It's nice to do it and know how it feels (both on the body and the pride) then just move on.

At least you made sure the bike landed on your leg and not the road. Well done!

Well, since you just posted this on the internet complete with a picture, hard to imagine you'll have a more public fall!  Definitely a right of passage.  Hopefully you can get away without another.  I fell twice early on, but I can be a bit clutzy.

I think the only photos of my embarrassing falls are probably whatever the kids sitting in the car at the intersection took with their camera phones.

You'll fall again.  It happens.  Judging from the direction you fell, you might want to try clipping in your left foot first and starting with your left, and also unclipping your right first.  I've found I have a natural tendency to lean the same way every time, no matter which foot I unclip.

You may very well have paid them for life. The time I fell was right in front of the neighbour's house when it seemed the whole block was over visiting him.

I'm hoping that posting it publicly will negate the falling karma I gave myself by being cocky...

I live on a college campus, and was riding past some VERY attractive students when I wasn't looking and hit a curb.  At the time, it was my third time in cycling shoes, and I fell right over.  Not my best moment....

So glad someone caught that on camera!

I've done it a few times - usually at the beginning of an early morning ride. Welcome to the club!

Great picture and congrats on getting the first fall out the the way. The rest will come at the most embarrassing time possible.

I think the difference between men and women becomes more apparent during these sorts of incidents. For us men, we don't tend to lie there smiling, we tend to go into some sort of hyper-drive and get up as soon as possible and then look around to make sure nothing tripped us. The only problem is that getting up quickly from a fall typically means that we become tangled in the bike and cause even more damage, however we rarely end up with pictures on the Internet of us smiling lying on the ground. We prefer pictures of the road rash which was caused by sticking our foot through the spokes of our bike.

Thanks for posting and good luck!

Welcome to the club - well done.  Unfortunately you are probably not immune to future falls.

Just this Saturday, I unclipped then rested my foot on my pedal as I went up to a curb.  You guessed it, it clipped right back in and I didn't know it.  I didn't fall but it was super close and I looked like an idiot

enjoy,

Duane

I just had my first fall a couple of weeks ago, also on my second ride on a new road bike!  I pulled into my driveway, feeling good about my ride and that I hadn't fallen yet, and my 8 year old daughter starts talking to me as I'm stopping.  I start to say something, then realize I am basically stopped and still clipped in.  She got a big kick out of it and now helpfully reminds me to unsnap my shoes before I stop.

Did this just yesterday on a ride. Pulled up to a stop sigh. Unclipped one side, put foot down. All is good.

Brain decides "It would feel better if both feet were down". Right foot still clipped in.  Over we go to the right.

Only 8 or 9 cars saw me do it. Smile

The car right next to me looked horrified. I laughed at myself, and then went on my way, bloody knee, road rash, and all.

Awesome, fantastic pic! Yes, you will most likely fall again - but now you know it does not hurt. On my most memorable fall I took out three of my buddies at a stop light. The cars queued up behind us were not NEARLY as amused as we were...

I fell on a guys Mercedes (one of the REALLY expensive ones) for my first fall.  In traffic, on the way to work so EVERYONE saw.  I unclipped but the bike went the other direction.  Thank GOD I didn't damage his car although he wasn't overly thrilled about it

I appreciate all the fall stories.  Makes me feel better.

Of course, I managed to fall next to a person with a camera in hand, but it gives me a good picture to go with the story, at least.
