Subject: Recommendations on bike trainer

Hello all,

I am looking into getting a bike trainer and I need some advice. With a new son and an over protective wife (yeah, thats what I tell myself Tongue out)  Im not able to go out riding much.  Would you please recommend a trainer that will work for my skill and budget.

Currently the majority of races are sprints with one or two OLY. I can do well on the ride but im looking to really improve. Im training on a stationary bike at the gym but I am limited to 80 minutes MAX per session. Im hoping a trainer will help to increase my ability on the bike and prepare me for a HIM sometime in the future.

I would like to keep it under $200.

Let me know what you think!

Finding any trainer under $200 will be hard to do...that said, I have two of the 1up USA Trainers (one for me and one for my wife). We love them and my bike mechanic said that it's the nicest trainer he's ever seen. There's a reason they've won Road Bike Review's "Best Of" award for each of the last eight or so years.

I have one of these and it works well. Rode lots of miles on it this past winter and still ride it lots even now that it's warmer. Also, rode on one of these with a group who had a mix of these and a similar cycleops model. I tried both and couldn't tell a difference.

I would say no matter what you get, aim for a fluid trainer. The magnetic and wind trainers just don't provide the same experience. Also, make sure you get one with a lifetime warranty on it. Most trainers do, but just double check. Hope this helps.

EDIT: also found here for $199.

Thanks.

I was not sure about about the fluid or mag trainer.  Looks good, and right in my price range!

If you are in are around a meduim or large city, you should have no problem finding a used Cyclops Fluid 2 on craigslist.  That is what I paid for one that had been used three times.

If you can stretch, buy yourself a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine or Cycleops Fluid trainer (providing you can't find one used in your price range).  The quality is well worth the extra money and if you consider this is a long term purchase, the difference over the life of the trainer is minimal.  If you try to save money now by buying a cheap trainer and you end up having to replace it a year or two down the road, you would have saved money by buying a KK or Cycleops in the first place.

Gotta agree with the others. If this is going to be a key part of your bike training, then getting a quality fluid trainer like the KK or the CycleOps Fluid 2 is a very worthwhile investment. I used to hate trainer rides, but nowadays I really like riding my KK. My family prefers it too.
