Total Time = 1h 11m 36s
Overall Rank = 29/155
Age Group = Under 39 Clydes
Age Group Rank = 2/8
Pre-race routine:

Got off to a little bit of a late start because of bringing the family. Still made it to the race with plenty of time.
Event warmup:

None really, got transition set up, went back to the truck with Riley, grabbed chairs and bags/cooler/beach toys and headed down to swim start. Watched the OLY start then went in the water for a quick dip, test the water then got to start.
Swim
  • 08m 3s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Waves were the biggest of any race I've done so far. Was never able into a rhythm. Seemed like there were a lot of people breast stroking today. 1st turn was a major log jam, ended up swimming wide to avoid the guy treading water.
What would you do differently?:

Start wider, put my earplugs in BEFORE the gun goes off.
Transition 1
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

Another first on this T1 - had the strap on my left cleat come out of the metal loop that allows you to tighten the strap. Only took a few seconds to get fixed.
What would you do differently?:

Put helmet on before taking my bike off the rack, still don't know why I did that.
Bike
  • 36m 8s
  • 13 miles
  • 21.59 mile/hr
Comments:

Passed a bunch of people and was only passed by 4-6 riders.
What would you do differently?:

Not lose my Hammer Gel flask. Reached back for a quick shot of gel at mile 9 and... ut-o.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

I was a real mental boost coming into T2 to a bunch of empty bike racks. Far different than my first race.
What would you do differently?:

Find a different pair of shoes (see run comments).
Run
  • 23m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

This was the worst run course of any race I've done. The race started near the peak of high tide leaving virtually no hard packed sand to run on. To add to the frustration, ever 100 yards or so, there were these little tidal pools that you either had to run around, try to jump over, or run through. I ran around them for the first mile plus trying to keep my shoes dry. Ended up running through one that was too big to run around. Just after the turn around I took off my shoes and carried them to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Vibram Five Fingers.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, shade, yogurt, cookie, pizza...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing, I was 5 minutes faster than I was last year at this race and still came in 2nd.

Event comments:

I really like this race with the OLY & Sprint at the same time. If I do not do St. Anthony's next year, I would like to do the OLY.

Way to go out there today, Chris!  Your thoughts pretty much sum up mine.  The swim was definitely challenging.  That was the bounciest swim I've encountered thus far as well.  The run... geesh... I saw a few people carrying their shoes.  Crazy!

You did totally awesome out there today and it was so nice to meet you!  Congrats on your terrific finish!
