Subject: Wetsuit or No Wetsuit?
I am contimplating doing a Sprint Tri (first one) in September and the water temp for the ocean swim should probably be about 70 degrees. My money situation is tight so a wetsuit will probably not be in my future until after the race, so my question is should I do the tri without a wetsuit or should I wait until next season once I have all of the equipment ready to Tri? By the way my goal is to just finish the race.

Opinions please.

You can definitely swim in 70 degree water without a wetsuit.  You could also rent one for 25-30 bucks.  If you think you are ready to do the race physically, don't let something like a wetsuit stop you (especially if your goal is just to finish).  I say go for it.  If you put it off, you'll spend the next 6 months wishing you had done it.

i've done 7 tris and will be using a wet suit for the first time this weekend (thanks to kelly who is loaning me hers!). i'm saving up for a wet suit ($1 for every 1000 swum starting this january) for now. once i have one, i doubt i'd use it in a sprint, but would save it for the longer distances, unless the water for the sprint was really cold.

70 degrees will be fine for not having a wetsuit. Your T1 will be faster without it.

You'll probably change your mind once you start wearing the suit.  The time you save during the swim with a wetsuit on is much more than the time it takes to get it off in T1.

If I go without the wetsuit, Should I just get a pair of Tri shorts and swim with those, so in T1 all I will need to put on is a Top? Or should I wear my Jammers and then slip on a pair of Tri Shorts?

More Opinions Please.

so i've been told. at my last race i was the second to the last person in my ag out of the water. this has never happened before, but before we started i also noticed that i was one of the only racers w/o a wet suit. we'll see how things go this time! i'm already saving up and have told folks that for my bday and xmas, i'd like contributions to the wetsui/tri gear fund.

I iagree with 3558- if you use PAM cooking spray and spray your legs, your wetsuit will come flyiing off.  It only takes me a few seconds to get mine off!

Without! Nothing beats a nice, crisp swim.

I am doing my first sprint tri this sunday and I have borrowed a 2mm neoprene vest from a friend. I am yet to try it out (i will tomorrow) but I am not sure if I will use it in the race. Will the vest make a big difference in my performance? I mean, does the vest give a swimmer at least some of the benefits that an entire suit would? What do you guys think?
