Pre-race routine:

Race start scheduled for 10 AM. Got there at 9:05 with the Mrs.. Proceeded to registration, unloaded the bike and setup transition.
Event warmup:

Did a quick run around the parking lot. Noticed the effort required the the elevated heart rate was not a good sign.

Popped a gel approx. 30 mins before start of the race.
Run
  • 20m 34s
  • 4 kms
  • 05m 08s  min/km
Comments:

Effort was more than what the results was. Elevated heart rate, and slow. It seems my neglected run training the last few weeks caught up to me.
What would you do differently?:

Better run training, and lose some weight.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Slow. Had the bike shoes in a back in case it rained, and it took longer to get into them. Also had trouble clipping the chin strap on the helmet.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions.
Bike
  • 56m 31s
  • 30 kms
  • 31.85 km/hr
Comments:

Crazy headwind, cross winds all depending which direction you were going in. My bike fitness was not up to par on top of that, and now looking at the HR data, I could have pushed a lot harder. I need to HTFU.
What would you do differently?:

HTFU
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Wasn't too bad except it took longer to get into the running shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions.
Run
  • 22m 50s
  • 4 kms
  • 05m 43s  min/km
Comments:

Something happen on this 2nd run. I'm pretty I bonked is what they call it. It seems I was hyperventilating at the beginning as my HR wasn't that high for what seemed like I was dying. It was just a terrible run. I had no energy left. My cardio was maxed out and I wasn't moving very fast. I'm sure the extra 25 lbs I'm carrying is hurting here among other things.
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight, get better nutrition for the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing...I was depressed with the results of this race. 3 mins slower than my first year last year is simply not good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad nutrition the days leading up to the race. My diet has been bad lately and it's my fault. Need to get disciplined again, which in turn will drop the excess weight I'm carrying around. Also, I think I should have had my nutrition prior to the 2nd run.

Ray

It was good to see you at the race. Don't let the dissapointing result get to you - some days our bodies are simply not in a racing mood.

See you at the 2012 edition.

Cheers,

Mark
