Trying to decide whether to use the 22 oz profile design aero or 38 oz. profile design aero?    Going to keep bottle in cage on bike with Perpetum.   Would rather ride with lighter bottle but don't want to have to deal with getting water at stations either?

I've never had any problems switching out at water stations so I say smaller bottle.  What issue are you trying to avoid at aid stations?

Find when you get to the first aid station, that is how far you should be able to go with whats on the bike. Last HIM I did, it was 18k to the first station, so that was just half a bar to eat and 1 bottle. Why cart all the stuff with you?

2 x 22 oz

1 on downtube, 1 on aerobars.  1 water 1 calories.  switch at mark 30.  but i tend to grab water at everyone, usually WTC events have 3 stops.

slow down to about 10 mph and grab it.  pretty easy.  much harder doing it 25 mph....

I'm doing the 22 oz Profile unit... I've never done a HIM before so take my advice for what its worth.

During training rides I've gone on a few 40-50 milers with just the areodrink filled up and a spare bottle in my cage, with no problems.  I'm racing with only the areodrink and refilling at aid stations.

I ran plain water in my aero bottle and calories (infinit) in my cage. I grabbed a water at the last aid station and dumped about 1/2 of the bottle into my aero bottle. I didn't need a full water bottle and I didn't want to drag that extra little weight around if I didn't need it. It was pretty cool the day of my HIM so I didn't go through as much water as a hot humid day will take.

At FL 70.3 a few weeks ago I had sports drink in the aero bottle and a 16oz water bottle behind the seat.  Just traded out at the midway water stop.

WOW...this is pretty much my exact plan for my first HIM coming up.

I just did a HIM this past weekend and this was my hydration:

(1) 24 oz water on seat tube
(2) 24 oz IM perform rear seat mount

I emptied the water, tossed it and grabbed another at mile 31.5 and tossed an IM perform bottle and grabbed a water at 45.5 (4 loops with single bike station - 3.5, 17.5, 31.5, 45.5)

I finished all my original fluids and about half the first replacement bottle. Never used the second replacement bottle. I did pour some water on my hands when they got sticky from gels/IM Perform (slosh a little of the IM Perform on your bottle and it gets really sticky)

trust me its a good setup...because its simple, its aero, its clean.

i saw some chit on bikes at florida 70.3 that shouldn't exist.  oh lord....some people apparently love to strap a parachute on the back of a TT bike after they spent 3,4,5k on a bike and another 200-300 on fit.

the only thing i will warn you about it is.  can you handle Ironman Perform I know you are doing a WTC in hawaii.  that drink can be brutal.  the taste is not the best if i may say.

Yup...I'm ditching the rear hydration setup (which I use for training), taping tubes under the seat, and lever/C02 will get thrown in my rear tri top pocket in a ziplock.  Gel flask and shot bloks in the bento box, and another gel flask in the other rear tri top pocket.  Water between the bars, and gatorade on the down tube.

Not really worrided about Perform or even gatorade for that matter.  They are more of a plan B option.  I've trained mainly off gels/bloks and water.  The gatorade/perform is mainly if I get sick of gels/bloks...or just want to switch it up for a little while.  Or if I accidently drop a flask...LOL.  My stomach is very tolerant...I've done a lot of prior bike training using mainly gatorade with no problems as well.

I just did a three part article on hydration systems for bikes you may find useful. It's on TriSports University whch should be linked through my signature line.

Also, check out Craig Turner's website for his X-Lab company. They have specific recommendations for race distances.

On my last (and first) HIM, I had a Speedfil bottle (it's about 40oz) plus a rear bottle cage with 1 bottle of water.  I was on the bike for 2hrs 43 min at an easy pace.   I could've just picked up a water bottle at one of the aid stations to refill my Speedfil after the Hammer Perpetuem was used up but I didn't want to deal with the stops.   It was a flat course (Galveston) and there wasn't much of a weight penalty for carrying an extra bottle in exchange for not worrying about aid stations (and the chaos that seems to be around them).  I will likely use the same strategy at my next HIM.
