Subject: Switching brake pads from wheel set to wheel set

Hi,

I have an aluminum rimmed wheel set and a carbon disk rear wheel.  I don't want to use my brake pads that I use on my aluminum wheel set on the carbon disk wheel because of the potential for bad wear on the carbon but I hate to have to switch out brake pads every time I cahnge wheel sets.

Is this the only option or does anyone have a solution?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, not really any solution but to do exactly what you're already doing... switching the pads

If you use carbon-specific pads on both I'd be worried about the pads picking up bits of metal from the Al rims and trashing the carbon ones.  Changing pads with wheels seems like a small price to pay to avoid that risk.

I don't switch pads. I ride my carbon rims 4-10 times in a season. And when I'm riding them...I'm not braking all that much. I just clean them off before putting the carbon rims on and let it go at that. I've never noticed any damage or wear on any of my carbon wheels.

Cleaning them off does very little...the metal particles picked up from your rims are too small to clean off effectively, but they work as a great abrasive on your carbon rims! It's not a wear you will notice since it's so gradual, but you are eating away on your carbon brake surface each time you brake (even if it's not too often...)

Ride a mountain or cyclocross bike with rim braking and this effect is magnified. Every little stone or piece of grit will score even Aluminum rims despite cleaning and good care.

I'm not real concerned about it, to tell you the truth. 15-100 miles a year or so, and a few taps on the brakes, are not going to damage the wheels. The abrasion, if any, is at a glacial pace. I will be long retired from any sort of sporting activity before there's any damage to the wheels from my brake pads.

You should be braking 70% with your front brakes anyway, so I honestly wouldn't switch out brake pads for the few times you use the disk. That being said, it's only the rear and it doesn't take that long to switch out pads.
