I am racing Kansas next weekend. I would like do to well at the race but my main goal this year is Lake Placid. Sunday my training plan calls for a 2:40 min run which will be roughly 17 miles for me. Should I do the whole long run or back off a bit. My last long run was 16.4 miles and I recovered from it pretty fast.

Personally, I think 2:40 is a long run to do any time during IM training.  I don't think it will hurt you much for LP if you cut it back to 2:00 (or even 1:30).  Do some extra biking in its place and maybe just add an extra short run (:30-:45) during the week if you want to keep up your weekly mileage.

A 2:40 run is not too long for IM training, neither is 17 miles, but both are near the max and probably a bit early - IMLP is 7 weeks away, right?  Why so much so soon?  Does your plan call for even longer runs?

Last year I did Boise as a training race for IMLP.  Quite enjoyed both.

Thank yall for the responses.  Bruce I am following Matt Fitgerald's Training Guide book (Level 6).  I actually believe it goes all the way up to 3 hours for one run.  I was planning on capping my long runs around 18 though.   Tomorrow I will take it easier and probablly just run for about 1:45.  Again thanks for the replies.

From what I have read, The benefits of any run over 2.5 hours versus the injury/recovery risk is not worth it. I think that was good advice to throw some biking in instead of pushing the run that far.
