Subject: Swim Coach

There's a thread in the main triathlon talk section titled "I swim like !@#$@#" - which could apply to me. I've started stepping up the swimming since my neighborhood pool opened - but I'm starting to think I need professional help.

Anyone have a recommendation for a coach in the western HoCo area?

No, but I know a very good coach in Timonium if you're interested in making the drive...

If Laurel is within your range, I have an amazing swim coach. Before I started with her I was holding a 2:20/100y pace at best for about 800y. Now that we've been working on all of my form issues I have dropped to 1:50/100y for 1600y, and quite faster at shorter distances. I am amazed at how much improvement I have seen using a swim coach, and it has definitely been worth the time, effort, and money. Send me a message and I'll pass along her contact info to anyone interested.

I have a terrific coach that has helped many a triathlete friend.  Her name is Terry Kominski and she is in Montgomery County, in the Aspen Hill area of Silver Spring.  She teaches at Strathmore-Bel Pre.  if you want a number, message me and I'll get it to you.  She is seriously the most positive person I've ever met.

Johnny - Laurel is far for me. I'd prefer in a 10mile range.

Turtlegirl- Please PM the coach's number. How were your results with this coach?

I'm going to have to say the opposite of ironbaby on this one: Turtlegirl's coach sounds too far away (but better than JJakes' suggestion Smile) but Johnny's coach might be just in the right range for me.

Thanks everyone!

Terry was recommended to me, as well. However, when I spoke with her a few weeks ago, she said that she teaches at a facility/club that you either have to be a member or pay like $10-11 per visist on top of her fee. She also said that by mid-June she may be able to do lessons at another facility outside that wouldn't require a fee on top of hers. Do you belong to the gym/facility that she teaches at? Or just find that the extra $10/lesson is worth it? Thanks!

Its less desirable to pay for a club visit since I am a member of Sports and Health. But for 1x/week, it can be done. I just need some initial tuning and then lots of practice by self.

I wonder if I can bring use my guest passes to bring a "friend" along at Sports and Health? ;-) Anyone tried that at their gym?

I don't think you have to pay at strathmore, you do at Aspen Hill Club. I'm a member of Aspen hill but I've taken lessons at the other place as well. Just ask.

A quick follow-up: what (ballpark) price range does a swim coach run? May have to clear it with the wife first...

Without speaking to Terry... from talking to Sports and Health, Craigslist listings etc it can be 50-80/hr. Not including the club/pool fee that might be slapped on if you both belong to different swim clubs. You might be better off buying sessions in a bulk if you are going to do many.

I have 10-weeks left before the Oly so I am just trying to get some tuning done and getting the mileage.

i sent her an e-mail a long time ago when you reccomended her and she said the only way to get lessons was to go to her pool which I don't remember at the time(some club which was like $50 a month).
