Forgive my ignorance on this topic or if it has been discussed before but what are the benefits of a tech shirt/tri-top for short distance races over going shirtless? Do they really help that much with heat management? It's getting hot and humid down here if FL.

Other than protecting the eyes of the innocent and fairer gender from my less than Adonis like physique (or being mistaken for a farmer), would it be better to just go shirtless?

It is against the rules to run without a shirt in many races.  Otherwise, I don't think it would matter.

Sunburn is another reason to at least seriously consider a top

Typically in hot climates shirts aren't required at local races.  Getting a dry shirt on a wet body is a difficult task, so you lose lots of time in transition.  Since most races in hot climate start around 7 or 8 am, getting sunburned in a sprint isn't an issue for most folks.  I go shirtless on sprints in the summer.
