Has anyone done the Redman Full or Half IM in Oklahoma City?  What are your thoughts on it?

I like the event because it's easy to drive to, low-key, easy waves, lots of positive volunteers, mostly well-organized, decent bags for the cost. The bike course leaves a LOT to be desired - two loops for the half - not interesting at all, really bumpy/somewhat crappy road for a big part of it. Run is super flat. Easy entry into Half-distance for beginners not to get too overwhelmed and you can get that non-branded half distance feel. But I would never consider doing the full on that course and I'm not that picky.

I did the half a few years back and loved it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat if it weren't for the drive.

Interesting - what year did you do it? The year I did it it was an out-and-back, only 1 loop for the bike. Only the very back portion was chip&seal.

Thanks for the comments, the bike course this year is four loops.  Good for spectators, but kind of boring if you are racing..

I did the full aqua bike last year in prep for IMFL.  Decent swag for the race.  The swim was interesting as there were parts that were very shallow and some people stood up and walked.  The bike was 4 loops.  It was bad because it got old, but good because by the last loop you knew exactly where you were on the course and how much further you had to go.  The roads were bad in certain areas.  I'm talking bad enough that at the athlete meeting they told us we didn't have to stay to the right.  Obviously I didn't do the run, but when I got off the bike it was hot.  I felt for the runners out there.

The volunteers were great and the spectators were, too, but a lot less of them at this race than when I did IMFL.  It's a smaller race.  Some people like that and others don't.  I am considering going back for either the HIM or the half aqua bike this year though (I need to see how that works with my marathon training).

I did the full back in '09.

I remember thinking the swim course was very short.  Not sure if that's normal from year-to-year.

Bike course was then 2 x 56 mile loops.  I believe it's the same course but just the first 28 miles.  If that's the case, it's flat to rolling (and I use rolling loosely).  Pretty fast course.  It rained on us that year which slowed things down a bit.

Run course was 4 loops on very flat park concrete trail.  At least I think I remember it being concrete.

The people who put this race on really do a great job and provide ample support.

I have a race report floating around.  I've done both Ironman and non-Ironman, and the only real difference in my opinion is the crowd support and the number of racers.  There were some long stretches on the bike but especially the run where it was just me and nobody really within my sight.  That's not the case with Ironman, where you feel like you are amongst herded cattle...  And the competition isn't near as stiff, as Ironman events always bring the elite.  Not saying that there won't be talent there, but if I can finish 3rd in my AG, well....

Did the HIM in 2010. Very nice race. Not too big, not too small. Nicely put together. Good race to go do.

Look at my race report on it, under races for more details.
