That's a recent change to their pricing. It was $150 up to a certain date and then $175 after that date.  I'm sure it's due to poor registration numbers.

Clear Lake is $80.  I'm not 100% sure of the pricing of the Onurmark events because I paid for the TX3 package and at a law enforcement discount.  I think I paid like $250 to do the Kemah Oly, Bridegland Sprint and Houston Oly.

Who else is excited about this? It'll be my first Olympic-distance event, and I can't wait.

Remember we also offer discount registration days where you can save $10-$15 if you bring in cans for the Houston Food Bank too. So if you register early for our races and come to discount registration you're looking at $65-$70 for our sprints and $85-$90 for our olympics. Law enforcement, Fire/EMS, Active Military, Teachers, and Houston Racing also get $5-$10 more off. Plus remember that we usually have a super discounted rate for 24 hours after our post race survey is sent out but you only get the password by finishing the survey. WTC should offer more options for discounts like that, it would help their image and also drive their registrations. Reward those that service our community, do a little work for charity and plan in advance.

In this year's HIM, we were swimming diagonally to go straight.  You ever see a plane land cross wind?  Just like that.

Was the water that choppy?  The website says "no big surf"!

Chop and surf are not the same.  Chop - little crappy waves that mess with your breathing and sighting, surf - more like big rollers that can make you seasick when they lift you up and down -  you can have both at the same time and that ain't fun at all...

2010 was far worse than this year.  I normally swim 1.2 miles in 31-34 minutes with a wetsuit.  My 2010 Galveston swim was 41 minutes.  It was 34 minutes this year.

Okay, any tips on how to handle the chop? I'm a very slow swimmer (2:30 per 100m), so I'm just looking to get out of the water without being exhausted.

A better question (for me) is what is the best place to get in the water that is simmilar to the swim course?

I'm guessing Moody Gardens doen't like you to swim right there any day of the week?

Also, anyone know what the chances of the 5150 being wetsuit legal are?  Seems like we have had some unseasonably warm temps lately.

The only way to get used to swimming in choppy water is to do it.  That can be tough to find on command.  Maybe 288?  One of the Houston folks will have to jump in.  One way might be to put 3 or 4 people in a swim lane so that the water is bit rougher than normal pool...  at least you can get a feel for what it is like to get a mouth full of water instead of air...

ETA:  Longer term - find a group that does OWS every weekend and go as often as possible.

288 isn't choppy and isn't salt water.  I've swum at Sylvan beach once (snuck outside the roped off area) but curious about places closer to the actual swim.

So here I am..... thinking about this race. I have decided I am not doing Oil Man and I just can't end my season with that horrendous run I did at the Houston Oly.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.  A couple more questions:

1.  Will the race be wetsuit-legal?  The website says it will be, so I guess that's the truth, but just wanting to make sure.

2.  When will the official race guides be ready?

Has anyone gotten their race guide yet? Or any official e-mails from 5150? All I have is my confirmation e-mail from way back when I signed up. The website hasn't been updated in a long time either.

Can you tell I'm getting antsy?

Good luck everyone.  Is this the same event management for the HITS series.  Anyone o anything about the HIT series.  It will be in Corpus and Marble Falls in 2012.

No, the 5150 series is run by WTC, the same people who put on the official Ironman and 70.3 events.

But the new HITS series does look interesting.

I wish they would publish something.  The registered participants want some reassurance that this event will happen!

Email the WTC.

I sent a note about this event several months ago and got a response a few days later.  I was asking if the event was in danger of filling up.

There is a contact us form somewhere on the site.

I still haven't signed up... but probably will.  I hope the water temp drops to wetsuit legal since I just bought one.

I e-mailed the WTC, and here's their reply:

"We are going to be pulling the final athlete list first thing in the morning. Once bib numbers are assigned, they will be posted online. We will also be sending out a pre-race eblast no later than Wednesday to all registered athletes (to include wave starts and bib numbers)."
