Wasa Lake, British Columbia
Canada
Rocky Mountain Triathlon
22C / 72F
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 54s
Overall Rank = 15/265
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 4/14
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5.30am. Ate bagel + chocolate milk. Arrived at transition about 6.15am which gave plenty of time to set up. Placed bike close to exit to save running far in bike shoes.
Banana at 7.30am which was possibly a little too close to the start time.
Made Gatorade too strong which meant I didn't want to drink it - need to remember this next time as may have led to dehydrated feeling after finishing.
Event warmup:

Gentle 5 minute jog prior to changing into wet suit. 10-15 min swim concentrating on breathing.
Swim
  • 17m 50s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

First ever open water swim so difficult to judge exactly how well I did. Struggled trying to get a rhythm as keep on finding other people swimming into me, and me them! Swam about 100m breast stroke during first 300m and then around buoy. Felt much better on final 300m when I found space.
What would you do differently?:

Need more general practise to get used to the sensation of swimming without being able to the see the bottom. Start towards the edge more so I don't have to deal with as many people.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No time as included in swim split. Felt it went ok though.
What would you do differently?:

Try having shoes attached to bike. Only got shoes last week so didn't have time to practise.
Bike
  • 39m 26s
  • 20 kms
  • 30.43 km/hr
Comments:

Took it easy for first 5-10 minutes as HR monitor was suggesting HR of 155 until it stopped working. Once settled and on the highway went with how I felt.
What would you do differently?:

Could have possible gone a little harder earlier.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Downhill on way in to line meant I struggled to brake and get shoes off. Issues with pulling running shoes on and tightening laces.
What would you do differently?:

Practise shoes off on gentle downhill. Continue to practise pulling shoes on - only got laces last week!
Run
  • 21m 38s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 20s  min/km
Comments:

Didn't drink on run because had tried to hydrate on bike which didn't go as well but with the short distance didn't really cause any problems. Could have possibly gone faster but with non functioning HR monitor didn't want to overcook it. Passed what felt like a lot of people.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really - great run!
Post race
Warm down:

Gentle walk around the transition area while eating Powerbar + drinking remainder of Heed energy drink.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience - first ever triathlon.

Event comments:

Really enjoyed my first triathlon. Went into it with three goals 1) Finish, 2) Have fun, 3) Finish under 1h 30mins. Based on my result, and that I also managed 1 and 2. I was actually smiling at some points on the run - could definitely gone harder....!
