Subject: Lake Norman OWS primer?

Hi guys, I am still a big time newbie and am going to do my first OWS this weekend at the Lake Norman Y offering.  I really don't think the distance is going to give me any problem. But I am wondering more about the logistics.

Will I be okay without a wetsuit this time of year? I'm guessing yes, since the temp I just found online was 83.5.

Is there any kind of support in the water for these, just in case? Kayaks and the like?

I only want to do one lap and not aggressively. Would I be better off waiting for the second wave?

Anyone else going?

Thanks!

I did my first OWS at the Lake Norman YMCA.  It was great.  I got there early to swim in the first wave.  You'll be fine - it spread out pretty quickly.  They had kayaks and a boat in the water.  Sighting was tough with the morning sun - you might want some tinted goggles.  You won't need a wetsuit.

You shouldn't have a problem getting the 2nd 3rd wave...people start lining up 45 minutes before to get in the first wave (first wave swimmers can stay out for more laps)!  I have always been in the 3/4 waves and crowding isn't really a problem...basically just a typical triathlon wave (maybe 50 people per wave)?

You won't need a wetsuit...in fact, bring some shrimp and stuff em in your pockets...they will be done by the time you get done!

I need to go but with this heat, I like to get my long bike/run in the mornings.

Agree with what the others have said.  I think it's great the Y offers these - it's a great way to get some OWS practice in.  I don't go nearly as often as I should.

Poop is in the lake.  Again.

The Lake Norman YMCA open water swims are an excellent way to drop a lot of weight very quickly.

I should point out that this isn't connected to the place where the Y is, but they frequently have this problem as well.
