Subject: My gross race-day observation (do not read if easily grossed out)
So during one of my few visits to the porto-potty on Saturday morning before starting the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon (sprint), I (unfortunately) could not help but notice inside the potty. And it got me to wondering... does anybody have a solid bm on race morning? Nothing but "nerve poops" in there, looking like piles of mud. I was among the offenders also, but at least I try to cover it up with some clean toilet paper!

I was there as well at Philly Sprint, adding to the mud puddle...

Im sure everyone has nerve-squirts before something like this.  Probably also has to do with everyone trying to get it all out at a time thats probably not really "on schedule" if you know what I mean.

I'm usually good for one fairly solid one with a couple of more loose ones after that.

Everything I eat the day before is geared to having a good bm the morning of the race. Better for a couple of nervous ones before than having to go 2 miles into the run.

I'll add a "me too." Getting up at 4:30 threw my normal routine off.

This validates what my buddy told me in the spring when I first started training: "Triathlons are not for the modest."

Triathlon 101.  Always stop at a mini mart/gas station/starbucks on the way to the race.   Having a nice, solid toilet with real toilet paper and seat covers and going without people waiting in line behind you and a real sink to wash your hands?  Priceless, plus you get to show up and ignore the long portopotty lines

I was there yesterday for the Oly, and one of the last waves.  I can tell you this, you didn't want to be down-wind of the porta-potties at the swim-in site!

It seemed they were out of TP pretty early, not that I needed it.  I saw leaves, newspaper, and maybe some race fliers as substitutes...

I read Noofus' race as "The Philly Squirt." I was thinking "at least the race was appropriately-named!"

I have spent more than my fair share (and, I accidentally typed "shart" there) of time in porta-potties and I find I rarely see a really nice, well-formed one in there. I think because, to everyone else's point, Port-o-lets are only used for a deucer in relatively unusual situations-- race morning, or after being out drinking until 3AM the night before going to the Pride festival, or eating a bad batch of fried calamari and garlic fries at an outdoor music festival...  The well-formed ones are more or less worked into your schedule in such a way that you do them in the privacy of your own home (or, occasionally, the ladies' room one floor up or down from your office, as to be nice to your colleagues.)

Looking at this scientifically, though, there is also the possibility that the solid ones sink.

I always imagined the blue water they out in there also serves to break down solids and tp so the can suck it up. Figured it makes emtpying the poo easier

that's what i'm thinking...

as for me, morning of race day it's a toss up, but i've never had problems: for going #2, i normally go 3-4 times a day, so just about any time, day or night is a good time to drop a deuce.

someone else alluded to this so I'm not the only one.. but on race day, once is often not enough, but I still know all the best stops along the way.

Just curious, on what do you base the belief that solid looking excreta is healthier?

I'm guessing most tri folk are attempting to eat well, more fruits and veggies, and these will definitely have an effect on your digestive system.

This thread does manage to express rather well that some people have interesting hobbies

Once on race morning is NEVER enough! Good for you if it is, but I'm always in the portapotty several times on race morning.

I am laughing hysterically right now. Laughing  I, personally work out my caffeine intake on a scientific basis to produce a well-timed bm before the race. Come to think of it now, it is usually a bit soft.

pre race nervous bowels.....pretty much universal.....What I can't ever figure is when organizers who should know the pre race nervous bowel phenom put out 4 pottys for 400 contestants....sometimes I think they're just a little sadistic.....just sayin.

And they short-supply the TP!
