Pre-race routine:

Only 4 hours of real sleep last night. Usual breakfast - Cliff Bar, Red Bull, and Gatorade Whey Mix.
Event warmup:

Got to the start about an hour early. Had plenty of time for stretching and light jogging. However, 20 minutes in the coral before the start and much of the stretching went to waste - oh well.

Comments:

I haven't run a race since May, so I was excited for today's race. In addition, this is my favorite race. My training this summer has not been great and I didn't know what to expect today. PB at this distance is 1:51, but I was thinking that I would be much closer to 2:05 today. I got a huge break as the weather was almost perfect - 80 degrees with little humidity.

They start this race based on projected finishing time and I put down 2:05 when I signed up 10 months ago. Things were pretty bottle necked for the first 5 miles and I had a hard time passing. For the first 10k I was passing a little, but trying to stick to a 9+ pace (57:10 - 10k). After the 10k mark, I hardly felt tired and decided it was time to push. The rest of the face featured 8:20 - 8:40's, including a 60 second 'restroom' stop. I ended up doing a lot of passing in this race - which was fun. That being said, the last mile was incredibly hard and I feel like I left everything on the course. Overall, I am very happy with these results as I bettered last year's time at this race by over 17 minutes. More importantly, I had a great time and reminded myself why I like race days so much.

What would you do differently?:

Maybe go out faster and keep consistent pace.
Post race
Warm down:

About 2 miles of walking getting back to my car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My endurance.

Event comments:

This is a great race with huge crowds and great volunteers. If you get the chance to run a Rock N Roll, I highly recommend it!

Wow! 17 minutes carved from last year? That's outstanding!
And I told you that you had a sub-deuce in you still. Congratulations!

How were the bands?

Great job shaving 17 minutes from 2004! I finished about 8 seconds behind you, out of Corral 9. Hung with the 2:00 pace group from Final Kick led by girls dressed in Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader outfits for the middle 3rd of the race.....so if you saw them, chances are we ran by each other or alongside for some time!

I'm thinking of ditching the Amphitheater shuttle idea for 2006. I'll buy you a beer at the finish line next year if you give me good hints as to where to park down at the beach

Hey Tony - great race!  17 minutes faster? That's awesome!  Running without the humidity is a world of difference.  I'm glad you enjoyed racing again (you were sounding quite down for a while).

Hey TOny,

Great stuff.  I am glad to hear you had so much fun.  And it is so nice to have a race that reminds you why you enjoy this so much.  All that AND a nice little sub 9:00 min/miles race....Good stuff!
