Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: TC 10 Mile? Okay, another question. How much time should I expect to spend after I cross the line? I will be right in the middle of the pack, so it should be busy (whatever you experience Steve doesn't count here, sorry). I am thinking getting through the finish, picking up bag, navigating crowds, etc, to exit finish area . I know this depends on what I do, but some races are different. If it's a cluster at the finish, please let me know. Still excited! I had an awesome run last night - these temps make me feel like a speedster. |

I've done it twice and both times the finish area has been busy but not a cluster. I'd say it took us about 15-20 minutes to move through the area, grab some food, and get our gear bags. But we weren't in a hurry. If you don't have a ride in St. Paul, then another 15-20 minutes to load up on the buses and go back to Mpls. |

It takes the green route (or at least is has in the past). Mile 3 is just across the bridge, and that 2nd mile is kinda nasty: uphill to Franklin, a bit of a short steeper hill to get on Franklin, and then rounding over the bridge (not fun if it's windy). But then you hit mile 3 and have nice, shady rolling hills on RR. And then the nasty little hills by St. Thomas... fun... |

Expert 1544 Alexandria, MN | Subject: RE: TC 10 Mile? Getting dangerously close! Hey, I've got a pacing question for all you real runners out there: I just did my first half (Dick Beardsley Detroit Lakes) in 2:17, 3 weeks ago. It is a tough course and very hot that day. Since then I feel that my running has only gotten better. I've been able to maintain a 9:30 or better pace on all my longer runs and today I did 3 miles at 8:17 and felt great. What pacing strategy would you suggest I follow on Sunday? My original goal was 10 min miles, then I dropped it to 9:30. Should I go out at 9:30 and go faster around mile 6 or 7 if I feel good, or should I try and go out at 9:15, but then feel like I'm risking complete failure later because I went out too fast? |

Elite 3687 | Subject: RE: TC 10 Mile? Climbinggonzo - 2011-09-29 7:41 PM Not a real runner but I would suggest you go out at 9:30 and see how you feel. Maintain until you get through Summit Hill. Once past the big climbs see how you are feeling. If I remember right you will be a little past mile 5 after the hill. If still feeling good I would kick it down from there. It's supposed to be a great day, add in race day adrenaline and awesome crowds and you might be amazed what you can do. Keep a little in the tank for the last mile and then drop one more gear and let it fly. Good luck and hope to see you out there. Getting dangerously close! I would say go out at 9:30 and pick it up if you feel like you can later. Especially with most of summit being up hill, you might want to save some energy in the tank. I know summit is not a steep hill, but it is defiinitely up hill. I have been running the course the last few weeks. Summit slows me down and increases my Heart rate. Like i said, i dont know a lot about running, but this is my experience. |

Extreme Veteran 574 Eden Prairie, MN, Minnesota | Subject: RE: TC 10 Mile? I don't consider myself a 'real' runner (well, not yet) but I did have a very similar goal for the Monster Dash last year. As the race got close, I found my average training splits dropping. I guess I run faster in cooler weather. Anyway, since it was my first race at that distance, I kept things conservative for the first half of the race. My goal was 9:15 splits, but when I still felt good with 3-4 miles to go, I slowly sped up the pace and my mile splits dropped from 9:00 to 8:30. This let me hit my best-case-scenario goal. Credit the adrenalin, I suppose. So, my advice would be to stick to your plan and adjust as necessary once you're around 2/3 through the race. Like the other guys already said, you want to have enough gas left to hit the Summit hill and finish with a good kick. |

I agree with Farlig and your thoughts - maintain 9:30 pace and see how you feel in the final 3 miles. Everyone has mentioned the hill to Summit just after mile 5, but the Summit is deceptively uphill for the next 2 miles. Do NOT let some potential slow miles in there get you down! (Attached is a graph of the elevation chart along with my mile splits from the last 2 years - something I made for my blog last week.) So my thought is to try to hold on to 9:30s through the start of Summit, hold that for a BIT longer, and then kick it into another gear if you can around mile 7. Good luck! See you out there!! Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: TC 10 Mile? I am not a HUGE fan of targeting specific paces, especially on a hilly course. Here's my plan, if this helps at all: Miles 1-2 (downhill): let my body guide the pace mostly through gravity and stay light on my feet and keep breathing under control (translated: this part will be faster) Miles 2-7.3 (mostly uphill): don't blow up, ease up the hills as needed and recover on the flatter sections. I know this section very well so I know when I can push or not - there are some flat bits before the hill at Summit (translated: this will be slower) Miles 7.4-10 (downhill): Find that hard sustainable pace (hopefully around 9 m/m for me), put my head down, and run. (translated: as fast as possible)This is basically what Steve did in his graph. Fast to start, knowing the middle section is slow, then let er rip. |
