Subject: Tri suit and wet suit

I am a new triathlete and had a question about the tri suits/wet suits.  If you are in a race that permits wet suits, do you also wear the tri suit underneath. Or does the tri suit serve both purposes?

Welcome to BT!

You wear the tri suit (or separate tri shorts & top) underneath your wetsuit.  The wetsuit is neoprene and only for the swim leg.  Tri suit is lycra with a thin pad in the crotch so it's comfortable for both biking and running.  If the water is warm enough you may choose to swim in just your tri suit but if you choose to wear a wetsuit you'll remove it in the first transition (swim to bike).

And yes, you can expend more energy trying to get out of your wetsuit than you expend swimming in it

Yeah, tri-suits you wear for everything.  Whether it's a 1-pc or 2-pc.  Wetsuit is only for swimming and goes over the tri-suit.  Wetsuits are optional, though the colder the water the more recommended they are.

I agree with the other statements I honestly prefer just wearing the tri suit the wetsuit is to much of a hassle for me
