Yep. Had someone tell me that this weekend when I had to stop and recover a bit on this killer hill. He passed and said hills were the best part and when I said not for me...he gave me that line. I was moved to the sidewalk so I wouldn't be in anyone's way so this wasn't me interfering with his ride. This was someone being nasty. I hope the folks in my first tri in September are more encouraging than him.

Who actually likes hills???? The only reason I rode up them on my mt bike was to go down the other side. Even on my road bike I prefer long flat fast roads over grinding out a 600' in elevation.

GL in all that you do! I am on your side. Hills suck.

Obviously he was taking his time up the hill if you had time for that exchange while you were standing there.

This seems like really good motivation to crush some hills in training to me.

Good luck in your Tri... you are not likely to see this attitude there.

It sucks that some people have to be nasty about things.  Overall though, I think that you will find most of the people in the tri community to be very encouraging.  Good luck on your race and don't let one jerk get you down.

I think you'll find that most triathlon participants are pretty friendly and aren't out there competing against each other, as much as they are competing against themselves.  It's one big, pretty supportive, fitness party.

oh- I like hills.  The feeling of climbing is rewarding to me.

IME, there is a huge difference in attitudes between triathlons and cycling events. The tris I have done have been very welcoming and encouraging to all levels. Good luck and enjoy it. Don't give what he said a second thought.

When somebody is blatantly arrogant like this to me I generally respond with something along the lines of:

"I'm glad I could help improve your low self esteem"

duder5189 - 2011-07-27 2:15 PM What a dick!

Sums it up.

And there's no shortage, either. I had a ride scheduled with a friend last week and she overslept. There was a group meeting up and they said I could join, then the ride leader showed and he told me I couldn't come because they were 'in training.' WTF else was I doing at 6am on a Thursday?

Oh, did hill and sprint repeats this morning!

I like hills. I used to love riding the all through the East Bay hills of Berkeley and Oakland, California, and now I'm in West Michigan, where sand dunes and overpasses are the biggest things around. When you're straining on the bike, your heart is pounding, and sweat is pouring out halfway up a grade that only get's steeper, but you're going to make it because your mind is powering your body, that's when you know you're really alive.

The guy was a jerk, though. The people I've met at races are very friendly, even though I was intimidated by the all of the carbon and spandex at first.

Try really hard not to think of this in terms of cyclists and triathletes. There are very friendly encouraging folks in both camps. you will find great people in both communities.

It's not a cyclist thing, it's just a D. head thing. I will say though, that there seems to be a inordinate amount of snobish D. heads that like road bikes. I'm just saying.... it's pretty obvious.

...and by the way... I love hills.

That guy is an a$$, just use it as fuel the next time you can't make it up.  Most people riding bikes are cool and encouraging.  The infamous 'bike snobs'/'elitists' won't even acknowledge you until you have a sub 10% bf, but they are a rarer breed than advertised.

Wow that is unreal.  I don't generally think bad thoughts of others on the bike because it is my happy place, but I think I might just say something to him or throw something at him or push redline to ram my pump through his front wheel (j/k of course!)

Reminds me of the d*** that I said hi to riding in Salida, CO last week and felt it was unworthy of a response - enjoy your miserable life buddy and just remember Karma sucks!!!!

I would probably bet that you won't find that attitude in your tri and if you do - just keep on doing what you are doing and let them live in misery alone!

eta - just re-read your post and there is not a situation that warrants that response at all - even if you made him come to a complete stop and have to unclip or he would fall over or hit you.

And I love hills - just saying!

I nod or wave to other people on tri bikes and rarely (closer to never) get a response. Almost everyone in a Jeep or on a motorcycle waves back!

I love hills too ... a tough climb and 40mph descent are two of the best things about riding a bike.

As far as roadies being more snobbish than triathletes ... I don't see it. Both subsets are made up of people with most likely the same percentage of snobs. Can't see how the type of bike you ride or race you compete in makes a difference.

Honestly, I hate when people do that. Just because we both ride bikes doesn't mean we're friends. Especially when I'm in the zone going 35km/hr.

If we're both on a group ride leisurely going sure I'm all about being friendly and all of that.

I know there are DB's out there...  But this almost seems unreal, especially if it was unprevoked.  I have been riding for 20 yrs and nothing even CLOSE to that has happened.

I mean ONCE, while doing an EZ ride in earo position, some recreational rider passed and said "why are you in your bars, it's not even windy out"... with a condesending tone...

And of course, you get the "ballsy" teenagers in the car driving by yelling out the window "fugging ride faster you p*#&$y!!!".  The usualy crap.

But I don't know any cyclist who is a stranger to someone say something like that!  Maybe my friends, though!

I agree when I'm doing loops on a busy bike path. It's all I can do to muster the energy to say "on your left" every 10 seconds.

However, when I'm out in the middle of no where, it's more an acknowledgement of common purpose than a gesture of "friendship".

I also stop and offer assistance to anyone sitting by the side of road even if they are "clearly" fine changing their tire or just on the phone. Most seem annoyed, but over the years, there have been some that were actually calling a friend or spouse to come help.
