True, but he is still someone who was specifically brought in by the diocese to make sure that pedophilia wasn't happening in the church. The church hiring committee didn't do a really great job with it's selection. |

The church hiring committee was made of humans, and they obviously made a mistake. i just don't want this to become a ZOMG THE PRIESTS ARE AFTER OUR CHIRRENS thread when this particular situation doesn't involve such a thing. ETA: It was the "spiritual path" comment that triggered that. i mean, it'd be better to talk about how a father of four who was social worker was uploading child pornography. I believe the point being made was in reference to something you edited out, which was specifically that some believe that somehow being Catholic is fraught with danger. It's no more fraught with danger than being some other religion or an atheist. And considering that the person in question is not a priest, the religion should not have anything to do with the equation, other than the fact that he was hired by a church. |

Fair enough. I'm curious though whether other religions are hiring "Child Protection Officials" for their churches? Also, are such officials commonplace in Catholic churches, or was this just the reaction to the recent scandal of one particular diocese? ETA: I don't mean this to pick on one church over another. I have no dog in that particular fight whatsoever. It's honest intellectual curiousity on my part. Edited by ScudRunner 2011-08-02 3:31 PM |

Fair enough. I'm curious though whether other religions are hiring "Child Protection Officials" for their churches? Also, are such officials even commonplace in Catholic churches, or was this just the reaction/solution of one particular diocese? I don't know about other churches. As for commonplace, it's the first time I've heard of the position, and yes I am Catholic and part of a congregation. But, I don't pay that much attention to the positions they have, so it's entirely possible they exist and I am completely unaware. |

I assumed it was a legitimate question, just one that I don't have a definitive answer for. To be completely fair, yes the position was created because of past issues within the Catholic Church, and I am assuming within the specific diocese. But, like I said, I don't think that necessarily means that Catholicism is more likely to attract or breed deviant behaviors than anything else. Of course, I'm sure that point could be debated based on what we might consider deviant behavior. Some might consider a belief in a deity to be somewhat deviant in and of itself. Not directed at anyone in particular. I'm just being bored and writing random stuff. |

Champion 8540 the colony texas | Subject: RE: Church child protection chief caught with 4,000 child porn images while it is shocking that this person was caught considering his position. How often are people caught doing something that they hold a position of being a watchperson for. It's like a CPA in an auditing department being caught stealing the money, or an IT security person hacking into records. It happens, people are human and often do messed up things, regardless of position, beliefs or whom they work for.

The USCCB, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, established the so called "Dallas Charter" in 2002. Here is the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People if anyone cares to read it. |

Short of raiding a prospective employees house it's very difficult to weed out these guys in the hiring process. It's why there are so many people in positions of trust we see on the news. The school/church/etc... always comes back with "he/she had no criminal record" |
