Subject: Why Do I Never Enjoy Running?

I just don't get it,

So may times I hear people say or read articles in which people say running is so much fun, or such an enjoyable activity.  That people feel free or an escape when running, or when they were injured and not able to run they felt so bad and missed running.

I have never had these feelings, running has always been a chore for me, never fun - always painful and agonizing.  I liked training for a few triathlons I did, enjoyed the swimming and biking, never liked the running.  To me it was just a neccessary evil I had to endure in order to do the complete triathlon.

How does one learn to "enjoy" running.  I enjoy ice cream, I enjoy a day at the lake or beach, I enjoy a good movie or listening to a live band, I enjoy biking or lifting weights ...but I have never enjoyed running.

I miss the days when I could go out and run 7-10 miles, wish I have never lost that fitness and am now trying to get back into the sport, but I just do not enjoy running.

What am I missing?

I've been running just about every day since I joined the Army 23 years ago.

I've hated each and every step of each and every run I've ever done. Abhor is not too strong a word to explain it.

It's the price I pay to be able to swim and bike amongst all these nice people and enjoy the day.

I like finishing.  That's what gets me through the running part.

This is where I ran yesterday.  Sure beats the dreadmill.  Finding great spots to run certainly makes it better(at least for me).

I don't know, but when you find out tell me.  I have never found the love of running.

Love the bike, like the swim (even if I suck) hate the run (where I truly suck)

What's not to like about sore knees, sweating profusely, looking at the garmin every 10 seconds wondering why you are at 2.2 miles and not 6 yet, trying to make it to the next porta potty without crapping your pants, wondering what that terrible smell is and realizing its your shirt. Yep Running rocks..especially for big guys like me.  I'm still waiting for that runner's high.

Your hatred for running shows in your logs if they are current. I started out with a less than happy relationship with running but determined to make it part of my life. The best thing I did was to do it frequently-nearly daily, even if they are short runs at first. As I my body began to adjust to the demands it was less painful physically, I started to get faster without really trying and I started to look forward to them, to find time during the day to squeeze a run in etc....think about it and try it. I have had similar results with swimming which was a bigger struggle for me than running

I enjoy it. I've run since high school. When I'm in really good shape, trotting off down the road for 10-12 miles at a good clip, is as easy as riding my bike. I decompress and breathe deep and think. I've (mostly) always looked forward to it...

Sounds like I'm in the minority here, I find running very enjoyable as long as it's not on the dreadmill. For me it's therapeutic, and even somewhat relaxing.

Why then chose a hobby where running is 1/3 of the activity?  Serious question.

I love these sorts of guessing game posts. My guess is that your expectations for "feeling great" on a run are un-realistic. Also, I think may be too focused on completing the run rather than running.

A great run will hurt and have moments of effortlessness. You will notice things during a great run that are easy to miss when riding a bike or driving by. Running takes less concentration than swimming and biking and so it really gives me a chance to think and relax.

So in the end, time spent running, while not easy, is something that I think adds to my life rather than being a drain.

Like bsc, I must be part of a small minority. I love running. Especially when it's in the woods, on a dirt trail.

Try mixing it up. Unplug -- leave all the electronics at home and stop worrying about distance, pace, or for that matter even time. Just get out the door and trot along for however long you feel like doing so. Go somewhere you've never run before. Dress for a run and go on a hike where you throw in some running occasionally. But also there is the frequency. Too infrequent and it's like you're starting over every time out.

x2.

For everyone who hates running and can only barely tolerate swimming, why not just race bike races?  I'm a bad swimmer and a mediocre biker and runner at best, but I find enjoyment in the challenge of trying to improve at each sport.

I dread the start of every run but once i am up and moving i feel a lot better. The thing I think when i'm running is about how much better this will help me be at swimming/biking. When I bike i think about how much it is strengthening my legs to run and swim. When i swim i think about the overall fitness and how much of a better runner/biker i will be. I try to focus on the improvement in myselft that i'm making and that helps me enjoy it a lot more.

I've learned to love running in the last couple of years since I started. Before it was just a means to an end, but now it's something that I enjoy doing once I get my butt out the door.

That being said my favorite part of triathlon is swimming. Oddly my strongest discipline is cycling, but I sometimes feel that it's too much of a hassle to get all my stuff together and ride. With running I can throw on some shoes and be out the door. It's quicker than prepping for a swim or bike.

I'm pretty sure that I will absolutely detest running until the day I die.

But, I keep doing it because I like the other 2 sports enough to endure it.

I used to hate it.  Now I truly do love it.  I agree that even great runs have some moments that hurt and some that are like floating.  One of the things that really helped me was joining an amazing, friendly supportive running group.

I used to hate running.

The true answer, and it is a painful one is a three parter.

1.  Run more

2.  Run more

3.  Run more

jackson61802 - 2011-08-11 6:33 PM I ALWAYS look forward to my runs and my swims....I NEVER look forward to riding my bike.

I'd be more than happy to volunteer riding your bike in sunny CA and you can run for me!! (I also do ocean swims LOL)

Since I started in the sport last year I have detested running.  BUT, only because I've been dealing with trying to find out why my left calf is always weak and I experience hip/back pain.  I finally learned I have a vascular issue that will require surgery to correct the calf issue and I have started PT to address the pain.  I'm also beginning to see 10s and 11s in my garmin even if for short periods of time.  For me, that's Kenyan pace. LOL So maybe someday I will float effortlessly too while I run.

I never particularly cared for running until I trained and completed a half marathon.  I kind of came to enjoy it.  I'd still rather be riding my bike, but running is nice too.  And honestly, I don't mind running on the treadmill at all.  It's rhythmic and I can stop paying attention to everything and just think and run.  It's nice.
