Subject: Crossing the beach into T1

Hey guys, coming up in november will be my first ocean swim tri.  I will be doing a sprint distance, then an Oly a couple of weeks later.  Both have a beach crossing into T1 and I'm wondering how you have prepared for the bike and run.  In summary, how do you take care of the sand before getting into your bike shoes and running shoes?  Or just HTFU and run with sandy feet since the distances aren't that long?

small squirt bottle or bike bottle at transition. Quick squirt, dry the feet and off you go

My last tri was in a lake, but they had dumped sand at the entrance/exit to make it easier to get out.  They had tubs of water to step in.... I didn't, but it was an option.

x2. My last race I ran from beach to pavement to carpet to pavement heading into T1. By the time I got there, my feet were mostly clean.

My last two races have been across a beach into T1.  Neither time did I notice anything or do anything to my feet.

I use to bring a bucket, fill it with water pre race, dump it on my feet at T-1 then flip it over and use it as a seat only if you need to put socks or bike shoes on.

That's so funny, I had not even thought about the fact that there was sand on the beach until I read this post. I was too busy trying to remember not to put my helmet on backwards

All my tri's have had a beach transition to T1...that said, I just give the feet a quick slap before I grap my bike and after I'm on the bike another "slap" before I put my feet in my shoes.  Normally it's not enough sand to worry about and what is left over gets washed away with sweat.

It really depends on how picky you are.  A little sand would drive me crazy. I've used a squirt bottle with water, and then a quick wipe with a small towel. It worked pretty good for me.

You'll have the kitchen sink with you in transition, right?

A lot of the sand will fall off as you run. But I do rinse my feet and dry them in transition if they are still really sandy.

I use a small tray with some water, dip my foot in, take it out and step on a towel and dry. Then do the same with the other foot, and get into the bike shoes.

I keep a small towel in transition.  As previously said a lot of the sand will fall off the bottom of your feet on the run to T1.  What's left on the top part I just do a quick swipe or 2 to each foot with the towel, then put on the socks and shoes.

Yes, because we're all clones and none of us experience anything different from anyone else on race day.

Yeah, but you should trust my opinion because I know the difference between pink and red font.  And it's an internet forum, where opinions and anecdotes can be just as helpful as cold, hard facts.

I used to worry about sand and would squirt water from a bottle to rinse my feet. then one race I forgot and never even noticed. I say just focus on the race and a fast transition and don't worry about the sand.

My first tri a couple weeks ago, T1 was on the beach in the sand.  So I rinsed my feet off and put my bike shoes on, just to run in the sand with my bike shoes on.  Once I got on course I had to stop and take my shoes off and get about a pound of sand out of each shoe.  Next year I won't put the bike shoes on until past the beach.

Historically I've either had a bucket of water or there was some sort of kiddie pool or something to step in when entering T1.  Did a race last weekend with none of the above and didn't have any issue.  Not much sand on my feet by the time I got to the bike, in fact didn't even notice it until I got my shoes out for a training ride the other day... I was like "oh I guess my feet were a little sandy".  YMMV
