Just wondering if anyone ever heard of this before..... My friend was in line in Lake Placid for saturday athlete registration for 2012 when a volunteer came out and asked 'who was here to register for the race TOMORROW." She saw two guys go with the volunteer. She then inquired what that was all about and was told that if people don't pick up there packets by Friday, they open on site registration up for walk ins for the race the next day. I have never seen this advertised anywhere and was wondering if anyone knows about this.

Never been to an IM, but our local RDs have packet pickup, and after it closes they resell any unclaimed packets.

One RD has a waiting list, the waiting list goes first, then others.  But you have to be at there to buy them.

Nope never heard of this, I was always under the impression the WTC overbooks their Im's with the expectation of injuries (DNS) and for those who just don't show up, last year at IMMOO they had well over 2900 registrants, most people will tell you these IM courses are being overwhelmed with too many racers, just my opinion, the All mighty dollar at work!

I agree they overbook because they have a predetermined number they know won't show. Because it is all about the almighty dollar with them, I don't doubt that they would take a small amount of on-site registrations. You figure if they let just 20 people in it doesn't really impact the race much yet they get another $10k.

Ummm, I'm gonna chalk this up to "some guy told a friend that told me that...."  an urban legend, until I see some independent confirmation (there seems to be a bias here).  Seriously, though, if WTC were only in it for the money, why wouldn't they allow people to withdraw for their $75, then resell the slots publicly, rather than one or 2 on the QT the day before the race?  That really makes no sense

Perhaps it was people that couldn't make packet pickup on Friday and were allowed to do so on Saturday, which happens from time to time.

I'm sure they were just picking up packets.  In the athlete's guide, they refer to it as registration, and yes - it's usually not allowed the day before, but I'm sure occasional exceptions are made.

I got an exception one year because United was threatening to go on strike two days before the race and my flight was in jeopardy.

I think they meant folks registered for 2011 who didn't get to check in by Friday, they allow to check in on Saturday probably while they were also allowing current athletes register for 2012.

WTC wants everyone check in 2-3 days before the race, in rare instances of flight delays or other odd things, WTC will allow folks to check in day before race.

I can't imagine there being a 2 random folks milling around who are trained, tapered, and have all the gear to do an IM the next day  who just shrug their shoulders and say "why not?".

I totally agree with all you na Sayers and i said the same thing to them when they told me about it. However I was in lake placid with the two people who witnessed it and they called me right away because they were blow away. This was her 3rd IM and she certainily knows the procedure by now. They asked what was going on to the volunteer and tHey were specifically told they were opening slots because some packets were never picked up. Maybe this is each individual RDs call and only locals know about it or something.
