My participation may be in jeopardy, my wife's "second mom" is failing in health quickly. She was responding to treatment well last week and was given last rites tonight. My wife is pretty broke up about it since she is estranged from her real mom for the last 20 years. My wife is scheduled to do Olathe Medical Women's tri on Saturday, then may be heading to Iowa, so I mast not race this event.

They had over 65 as of last weekend, expect more to sign up this week, and also have some show up on race morning.  Should be a nice-sized turnout -- especially for someone doing their first triathlon . . . .As long as a few hills don't bother you  ;-)  However, the course is not anything as bad as Shawnee Mission Park.

Here is the latest...

Weatherby Lake Triathletes-

We are looking forward to a great event this Sunday 9/11!  Not only a great opportunity to enjoy the mild weather and challenging terrain, but honor both the September 11 attack as well as our fallen local hero, Jeremy Katzenberger.

Few reminders:

·         If you haven’t registered/paid yet, please fill out the appropriate registration form (attached) and email it to [email protected]Please make your checks out to SWAT.
·         Please use your best judgment to find a parking spot at “C-Point (Start/Finish/Transition)” that is out of the way of the course, off the road, and close to other cars.
·         Race check-in and body marking begins at 8am.  Each person will be required to fill out a release from at check-in.
·         We will gather as a group at 8:45am to go over any last minute items.  The first wave (Long Course Individual) goes off at 9am, second (Team – Long Course) goes off at 9:05am, and third wave (Short Course Individual) off at 9:10am.
·         Wetsuits are allowed (yesterday the water temp was 77 degrees).  That said, feel free to swim/participate in whatever attire you prefer.
·         The SWAT barbeque will start after the race at 1pm at Birmingham Park just off the Weatherby Lake dam.  All triathlon participants are invited to enjoy the BBQ competition, live music, beverages etc…  Will be a great way to unwind after a hard race!

Directions on how to get to the start/finish.
Can’t wait!

Awesome!  That will be about right for the "transition area" . . . if you want to call it that.  I think the bike racks may end up being the various trees and park benches.  :-

Actually not a bad thing.  Kind of adds to the uniqueness of the event.

I will be doing the long course and (likely) wearing a royal blue and white 2XU tri suit and riding a white and black Quintana Roo Seduza bike.

I've been thinking about making my own rack for a while now.  Guess this would be a good time to finally tackle that little project...

Actually, if you did that, they would not mind one bit.  Make one for me while you are at it.  Deal?  :-)

Tell you what, if I get around to it and it comes out okay, I'll post back here with the materials costs and maybe if I could make a few bucks I'll make some more. So no promises, but I'm easily bribed...sometimes

I think so, but they would appreciate an e-mailed form beforehand, if at all possible.  Then just bring a check to the event.  But if it is a truly last minute decision, they would probably let you in.

Who wants to use a rack tomorrow?  First come first served, except for me, my spot is reserved!

That was a lot of fun. It was great meeting faded memories and bikeday. Congrats to Jayhox on the win. Sorry I had to skip out on the BBQ, but I hope jayhox will share a picture of the hardware.

Yes, 143 was the final count.  They were expecting 50-60 when they first thought of opening it up.  I loved the relaxed atmosphere.  My transition spot was a tree, AWESOME!  Nice and Hilly thank goodness it was a sprint.

Many, many thanks to Patrick (Jayhox) for reminding me how slow I am and how much work I've got to do this winter   Super fast job out there Patrick!

Nice work on the bike racks Eric but I really like my tree!

Thanks, guys.  Beautiful weather.  Sorry . . . PERFECT weather!  Great course.  Fun people.  Great Race Director and volunteer crew.  Relaxed atmosphere, but tons of energy and enthusiasm by the spectators.  What a great event.  That is on my yearly calendar from here on out.

Reece -- let us know how the highway-bike-rack-gremlin insurance replacement works out.

Jon - Sorry about your equipment issue.  But you now have a cool and unique story for how you gutted through a finish in spite of it all.

Impromptu-made bike racks from forum members, swimming under the dock to get to T1, tree racks . . . the race had it all.  :-)

Again, great to meet some of you!  See you next year when the race schedule picks up again.  (or before then for some group rides.)

Bike situation looks grim.  KDOT/MDOT have nothing.  I've checked Ebay, Craiglist for possible sellers of "my" bike.  Checked some bike shops, no dice yet.  Auto, nor renters insurance covers anything.  Was in Trek store today, they had a 1.5 for just under $1,000 after 15% discount, size 62.  Hardware is Tiagra but heck, I had Sora .... I'll be going with a road bike with aerobars, just looking for sales.  Used bikes in the 60-62 frame size are rare.  Thankfully my friend Frank is loaning me his roadie, it's a 58 but with the seat raised it's O.K.

I'm glad everyone had a great time. I wish I could have done it with you all. I would have suffered. My legs feel fine today, but my arms are killing me.

The Olathe Medical Center Triathlon was wonderful. And I didn't freeze! Like today, yesterday morning was a perfect morning for a race.
