Regular 853 | Subject: RE: How OFTEN do you wash your workout clothes? I'm always amazed when people say they don't wash their workout clothes after wearing them. Mine definitely have the need after one wearing, whether it's a 15 minute workout or a 3 hour workout, those threads get washed with sport wash and sometimes I run them through the washer twice with a 2nd rinse! jami |

Member 236 SWOH | Subject: RE: How OFTEN do you wash your workout clothes? My workout clothes stink even when they come directly out of the washer. And not like BO, but like urine and melting plastic. I don't pee on myself, so this is pretty disconcerting. I want to make the switch to merino wool one day when I can afford it. Merino does NOT hold odor (I've smelled an Icebreakers shirt that someone wore every day for a month without washing). It breathes and wicks better than tech fabric, too, and they hold up to extreme wear and tear. It would be nice to put on a clean workout shirt that doesn't stink. |

Pro 5011 Twin Cities | Subject: RE: How OFTEN do you wash your workout clothes? Stuff in direct contact with my skin--sport bra, shorts, bike shorts, shimmel, (sometimes) socks--I hop in the shower with, and then hang dry, but I don't throw them in the wash after every use. Not even remotely close. Other stuff gets washed if it's besmirched (mud, blood, etc.) or if it stinks/can walk by itself. Where that threshold occurs varies according to product. Tights can go a month or so. Jacket, usually most of the winter--at least a couple of months. Long sleeves, depends on how many layers I am wearing and where they fall in those layers. And so on and so forth. |

I guess I'm gross but it really doesn't bother me Thank you! The first of the great unwashed masses to honestly reply ... I actually yank sports clothes out of my maid's hands if I've only worn them for 10-minute workouts or they don't smell like they've been worn ... I think I have a phobia of them being washed too much and degrading. Bike shorts get washed every time, though. The tropics are murder for developing hyena butt. |

Champion 4835 Eat Cheese or Die | Subject: RE: How OFTEN do you wash your workout clothes? Count me with the gross people. 2-3 times, for average length rides or runs. It's partly out of necessity. Since I travel most of the week for work, and have to pack light I can't bring multiple sets of workout clothes. If I go for a long ride, those clothes will usually need to be washed after that. I also make sure to hang all of my work out clothes to dry immediately following the activity. It keeps the funk to a minimum. Even if I was washing them every time, if they didn't come off me and go right in the washer they get hung to dry. Throwing sweaty clothes in a hamper to sit for several days is a recipe for funky clothes. As for swim stuff... I've never washed my jammers. Ever. I soap them up in the shower then take them off and rinse them, then they get spun in the drier. I've also never washed my wetsuit. It gets rinsed in fresh water from the hose immediately following the swim and then hung to dry. |

And so on and so forth. Maybe I should revise. Since it's still warm I was thinking summer clothes. In winter, base layers are in the 1-2 wearings camp. Outer layers are when they start to crawl or I can't stand the smell. But like my summer clothes, I am meticulous in making sure every thing is dried appropriately after activity. |

(except for the part about the maid ) If it's not too hot and sweaty, I have no problem with hanging my workout things to dry and using them the next day. Especially in winter, I don't wash my long tights and top layer clothes after every workout, because I figure the washing is harder on them over the long haul. x2 on the bike shorts. |

Extreme Veteran 887 Lake Placid, NY | Subject: RE: How OFTEN do you wash your workout clothes? Running shorts, leggings, and long sleeve tops get two wearings, with generous airing out in between. Jackets on an as-needed basis. Everything else gets handwashed in sports wash after each wearing. I keep laundry from getting out of control by wearing cheap cotton stuff that can just be thrown in the machine whenever possible (i.e. short, easy runs). Edited by PinkPrincess 2011-08-25 10:41 AM |

You guys bring up a good point. Although I only wash about once a week, I do hang items to dry immediately after the workout. By the next days workout it's dry again. I think this really helps alot. As a side...I don't think I've ever washed my swim jammers. I hop in the shower with them after laps and hang dry to the next session. Edited by mktoson 2011-08-25 10:41 AM |

Veteran 371 | Subject: RE: How OFTEN do you wash your workout clothes? I'm in the every time unless it's a super short workout camp b/c I don't sweat very much. So a 30 minute easy spin on the bike, I will likely re-wear my sports bra (I wear two at a time, so definitely re-wear the top one that didn't touch my skin) However, I will ALWAYS wash bike shorts after wearing. I'll even wash them if I wore them and didn't actually bike (like got dressed to work out, then couldn't for some reason.) If it was on me for more than about 5 minutes, yep - it's going in the wash.... So those of you who are wearing stuff like cycling shorts and running shorts multiple times without washing - do you wear underwear underneath?! I could see re-wearing if that were the case, but otherwise...... |

It's hard enough to plan out all the workouts, let alone additional laundry sessions. I put up a few racks in the bathroom to air dry stuff though. I don't see it as that big of a deal either. |
