Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:00, walked the dog, loaded up the car and drove to the race. Ate a Clif bar and bottle of water on the way.
Swim
  • 30m 59s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Brackish water. Very warm water. Kept pretty wide to avoid contact during the first 200 yards. Was able to maintain breating every third stroke which helped with sighting and also told me that I was not pushing too hard.
What would you do differently?:

Sight a little better. I had to go back around a bouy out by the lighthouse. Ended up just inside of the bouy so it didn't take too long to go around it.
Transition 1
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Got stuck behind someone walking out of transition, so that took a little longer than if I were setting the pace. Ate two Bloks and then put them in my packet before grabbing bike. Somehow the blocks popped out of my pocket but I didn't realize it until I was on the bike course and reached for them.
What would you do differently?:

Not lose the Bloks I needed on the bike.
Bike
  • 1h 22m 7s
  • 28 miles
  • 20.46 mile/hr
Comments:

No nutrition on the bike except a bottle of Gatorade.

Bike felt good. Didn't feel like I was pushing too hard. Was able to spin up the bridge both times and fly down the back side.
What would you do differently?:

Have nutrition available. I think the missed bike nutrition affected the run performance.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Saw my Bloks laying on the ground in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Slow down a little more before the flying dismount.
Run
  • 1h 09m 38s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was pretty miserable for me. My legs never loosened up and I had to run/walk the entire course. My lower left leg would start to ache and forced me to walk off and on.

Ate a GU at the beginning of run and then put the second GU in my pocket. At some point, that GU also popped out of my pocket.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure my race belt is positioned at the top of my pocket to hold the GU in there.

Dump even more water over my head to try to keep cool.

Event comments:

Very good race. With the daily high expected to be 107, I was hoping for the race to start on time since I was in the last wave. It was about 15 minutes late.

One safety item. There was a very large gap in the concrete on the bike course just outside of transition/ mount line. I saw one person from the sprint race crash as I was waiting for my swim wave. I'm sure it will be addressed next year
