The Great Floridian and Redmann both had 18 hour cut off times but would still let folks finish past that. Ironman Canada actually used to allow 18+ hours back when the Hoyts made their first attempt at an Ironman (and made it). Hell at Kona in the real early days the cut of was 24 hours.

17 hours is just convient 7am to midnight. Don't have to swim in the dark (safety) and then the volunteers and law enforcement folks actually go home at some point. As other have said cut off times do vary. Ie IMFL bike cut off is 5:15 pm (10:15 vice 10:30) for safety reasons since sunset comes early in November and Panama City is just over the time line, and some races in Europe have 15 or 16 hour cut offs for various reasons. There are not any rules related to cut off times that I know off so the race director has descretion.

jkb - 2011-09-01 9:13 PM The Great Floridian used to be 18 hours. I don't know if it still is. If finishing under 17 hours is a real concern, choose your race to suit your strengths. Pick a flatter course-check the course profiles/elevation charts before signing up.

That's a good point.  Not all venues are created equal.  So just chose an easy IM.  :-)

No need to extend beyond 17 hours.........just lower your bike seat. That will help you become much, much faster!

Thanks. We'll see how the Augusta 70.3 goes and choose the next step after that. Appreciate the advice, especially about having a thin skin and about choosing an IM that plays to your strength.

The old stand-by line, "if it was easy, everyone would do it" seems to apply here.  You know the rules when you sign up and the cut-off is 17 hours.  There are also other various cut-offs throughout the day.  Yup, its a long day and when you finish, you will have earned the title of "Ironman" for a reason.  It must be EARNED.  Good luck in your dreams of being an Ironman!

That is awesome that there are races that allow post midnight finishes but I'm going to have to agree with some of the above posts.

17 hours is a LONG time to be on the course and I wouldn't wish that upon anyone, let alone 18 or even 19 hours.  You should be training for 16 and then the additional hour is cushion for when sh** hits the fan (and it certainly does on occasion).  But, that being said, I understand wanting as much cushion as you can get, just for peace of mind considering how much time you will have to devote to training.  Note that the extensions appear to be limited to the run though (as there is still a logistics concern on the swim and bike portions).

Good luck!
