Anyone do the hilly hundred on a TT bike?  I do not have a road bike but I thought the event would still be fun.  Comments...

You can do the Hilly on any type of bike you want.  I've seen everything from unicycles to the antique "high wheeler" type of bikes in my 20 plus Hilly's.

FWIW, it is a fun event, but it can be quite crowded on the actual hills.  There are people that will stop at the bottom (or middle) of each hill and walk their bikes to the top....sometimes dodging the walkers is more difficult than riding up the hills.

Have done a number of Hilly's & yes you do see many types of bikes out there.  That said, there is no way in H@!! I would try some of those 50+mph downhills on a tri bike.  WAY too crowded & the pavement is just too sketchy in many areas.  And many riders are not too great at bike handling by regular training ride standards while others try to make it into a road race (which it is NOT!!). Most every year there are a few crashes serious enough to call out the ambulances.  Last year I saw I guy who had just crashed & dislocated his shoulder (& prob broken his jaw).  Don't get me wrong.  The Hilly is a wonderfully fun event & a great celebration of cycling.  But pay attention while riding 'cause there is plenty of opportunity for trouble if you aren't careful (or sometimes even if you are).  If you choose to ride a tri bike I would avoid the aerobars for most of the course & be very controlled on the steeper descents.

FWIW-In my experience most of the unique bikes you see out there are not doing the entire course but only some flatter sections & photo ops.  Although there were a couple unicyclists recently who did the whole route except a few of steepest hills (like 20+% Mt Tabor).

I have been thinking about doing this tour but I am not sure how ready my legs are for that many hills.

I signed-up for the first time this year.  Not sure my legs will take the hills either, but I'm not going to wait around and wonder what if.....

Wow, just looked at the profile.  There is a max grade 24% on Saturday.  That might be a bit ruff on a tri bike assuming its not a compact.  If your a bit concerned, I suppose you could switch out a bigger cassette.  I personally don't care for climbing on my tri bike.  I like being more upright and unless your running Di2, you'll have to keep reaching down the bars to shift.  Climbing on a road bike is much more comfortable imo.  I've even pulled out my road bike for a couple hilly tris.

I did it last year on my TT bike but I'm opting for my roadie this year. It was tough to get comfortable on the TT bike but it was still a lot of fun!

And if you like it, come up to WI next year for the horribly hilly hundred.
