Unfortunately I was unable to find an app for the iPhone for athlete tracking.  However, I have had success tracking via ironman.com on my iphone.

The iPhone (non-Droid) app (I haven't heard of one for a Droid-based Smartphone):

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pele/id390572860?mt=8#

UPDATE:
Note: The athletes for IM Wisconsin and IM70.3 Worlds are in the Pele database and you can start building your watch list

hmmmm...nice find!  From what I can see in iTunes it looks like people have been using it in the US.  The reviews from users who have tried it are mixed, but many of those are from 2010.  It is NOT a free app, but at a one-time shot of $2.99 I think I may be willing to give it a try for giggles.

I installed the app and was able to load all the athletes from the list here on BT.  It also looks like the app interfaces right into Ironman and has access to view old IM races and results....pretty nice.  Another cool feature is it looks like I might be able to see a map of where any athlete is on the course on game day.  We'll see how it all works this Sunday!

Another option is IMtrackr. First released to the App Store early April and have received positive feedback from app users. IMtrackr delivers updates of your tracked athletes on race day via push notification. Pretty neat. This could potentially be a huge battery saver as you no longer have to refresh other app or Ironman website on your phone every 5 minutes to find out the status of your athletes. IMtrackr is also a free download and you can track 1 athlete per race for free. IMtrackr can be downloaded from the App Store using the link below:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imtrackr/id836182662?ls=1&mt=8

303Triathlon just did a write up on IMtrackr and you can read about it on their website: http://303triathlon.com/Athlete-Tracker-Here%27s-a-Good-One

We will be releasing IMtrackr for Android in a few months. Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for updates.
