Subject: How much quicker are you at running events from your training runs
So I did Steelhead August 14th and ran a 1:46:57 after the bike. I have also been training to run a marathon on September 24th. Yesterday I went on a hard training run for 13.1. My time was 1:47:11. The training run might have been a little more hilly than the half at Steelhead, but I was kinda disappointed with my time. The day before I ran 6.5 at a medium intensity, so I didn't exactly have fresh legs. This will be my 11th marathon. I really want a new PR  (under 3:39- 8:23 pace) and feel like in order to accomplish this I need to hit around 1:44 for my half time. When I ran Boston this past year I hit the half way point at 1:46. This training session My 20.5 long run I ran at 8:39 pace (very HOT) and my other 22 long run was at 8:48 (very HOT). So I guess I'm asking how much faster do you guys run at the full event coming off a taper?

I'm slower runner with less marathon experience than you. FWIW- Trained seriously this spring to break 2hr HM.  Ran a hard 2:03 in training weeks before, then raced PB (so far) of 1:52.   Both runs were mid 70's temp although the HM race was more humid.

Races are my fastest - hence being races. I get my pacing from previous 10k races and use mcmillan to calc my target pace. I might do some 3-5ks at that pace or quicker to get a feel for it but if my HM goal pace is 4:18/km I wouldn't go run 20km at 4:18 in training - ever. 20mins at 10k pace, yes.

But yah if you are targetting a 3:30 marathon you should be able to do 1:45 easy for a half and that should be in training, repeatedly. More importantly would be to be able to do a 47 min 10K.

First, you're comparing a training run time with a race time, over different terrain. Not exactly a fair comparison.

Now, as to what I saw the last time I ran a marathon, my longest run of 18 miles was done at a pace of high 8s. I ran a marathon 3 weeks after that (not an official taper in there, but hey), and hit 7:22 pace or so. I ran another marathon about a month after that one, and hit 7:20 pace. My 5K time at that point was 19:55 (done about a week before that first listed marathon).

My "easy effort" runs were generally in the 8 min range, with some faster and some slower. Medium effort/"tempo" runs were in the 7s. I didn't do a lot of running at what ended up as my race pace, either. Most of it was slower, even the harder runs.

Depends on the weather and the other competition that shows up the day of the race, I would say on average I'm 10-15% faster.

I ran a 22 at 8:39 pace in the hellish heat. Hoping if the weather is nice I can stick to my guns and get that 3:30 PR! Time and race day will tellLaughing
