my only cold weather experience comes from the Miami Tris in mid April Ohio - socks (especially if you normally bike sockless) , tape the vents on your bike shoes. I think a long sleeve tshirt is fine to keep warm (plus you can wipe your nose with it). Only down side is a long sleeve tshirt takes a little longer to get on a wet body. I used a tshirt with a light windbreaker one year and it was fine.

I'll probably wear a sleeveless tri top , plus arm warmers and cotton gloves. They make take a little time to put on, but if you're doing the Half, a few extra seconds will be worth it for comfort on the bike.'

it is cool to start but your body and weather warm up quickly. i did the half there shirtless and sockless and soon into the bike i was fine.  late in the bike i was a little warm - on the run with the sun shining it is still hot.

if it is n the low 50's at start i will again go with a sleeveless wetsuit, shirtless on the run but i might wear a sleeveless shirt under the wetsuit so it is on for the bike and because of foot injury i need to wear socks (on the run only).  high 50's no shirt period. unless it is in the 40's there is no need to cover vent holes in your shoes (unless you have banana toes .

if you can, create a trial for clothing and transitions.  the weekend before go there (or a nearby lake) swim in your race attire at least a few hundred yards transition to bike as if racing bike at least a few miles transition as if racing to your run gear > you will transition better in teh race with practice and you will know exactly what you need to bring.

if its in the 50s, totally depends on the race distance for me. sprint/olympic, nothing would change.

Half, gloves would be the first thing i'd put on, easy and fast compared to arm warmers, and easy to take off and stash in your clothes on the ride if you need to. arm warmers would be my next choice if needed (at 50 i'd prob not worry about those and gloves, but your cold limits/how hard you are going will play into this). large tube socks make cheap throw away arm warmers as well, just cut out the bottom.

Tom, I just read my own race report and realize the post I made above is incorrect.  I DID HAVE A SHIRT ON to start the bike - however I did get too hot wearing it.  I will wear my non vented shoe inserts and no shirt.  I didn't own a wetsuit then.  I do now.  I will wear it.  I had no socks on -not due to the temp but to save 15 seconds.  I got blisters.  I will wear socks on the run this time.

I will also eat more.

I'll be cheering for you all from my cozy, warm bed.  I can honestly say I am officially thankful for my hamstring issue that is keeping me out of this race.

Good luck everyone!  Be safe, dress appropriately, stay fueled!

Its gonna be soooo cold!! I have no clue what to bring for the bike portion as I will be out there for prolly 3 and a half hours!!  I typically do warm up fast but when Im wet and on the bike and only in the 40's im thinking it could take a very very long time!

arm warmers and gloves. If you want throw away warmers use tube socks, they are cheap and let you pick how warm you want them to be with diff thicknesses. gloves, use the cheap black wool ones, they are around a dollar a pair.

vest when you are wet is a BAD idea as it will hold the water in/

On a somewhat humorous note, since I haven't had time to get to the lake and simulate these conditions, I honestly thought about taking a semi cold shower in my tri suit and jumping on my bike in the morning to see how it feels.  But I have this fear of hitting the top step in the hallway and sailing down the remaining 7 on my rear end so I bagged that idea...

I am totally behind the shower to bike trial. (just take it easy on the steps)  I did that in 2008 when I started tris.

And my time goal... well I went 5:05 in 2009 and my swim and bike should be as fast or faster but my run is going to be way slower.  i now think that 5:10 is perhaps a bit optimistic.

glad you are doing it without a time goal.  but keep pushing yourself - i use the mantra "don't be a panzie" often in my races.  i am actually quite verbally and physically abusive to my body during races.  days after i am usually questioning what is wrong with me mentally.

Cold is one thing. But cold AND windy is another.

I might do the du instead of the tri. I'm trying to wrap my head around getting in the lake, and then out of the lake, when it's 40 degrees and windy.

On the bike I'll wear a tri top, gloves, arm warmers AND a light wind vest or full sleeved wind breaker depending on the conditions.

So yes this will be cold.  I have a new long sleeve wet suit but i have not used it yet and i worry about new equipment for a race.  i will throw a shirt on for the bike.  i will probably not wear it on the run.

A few quick questions:

1.  Will they provide swimming caps?

2.  Is there a changing area near the transition area?

Good luck to everyone, stay warm.

Ive never been to a race that didnt provide swim caps....typically they are color coated for your wave but lately HFP has had all the same color.  They are not neoprene caps just a swim cap. Ive also never been to any event except for a full Ironman where there is a changing area near transition area...typically you go to the race ready for the swim stripe off the wetsuit to your tri suit and off you go.  Men atleast can have the luxury of putting on a dry top after getting out of the swim but women arent that fortunate and even putting on a shirt over a wet spots bar would still be WET!  Have fun everyone

This was quite possibly the hardest race - self induced.  I chose not to wear a wetsuit due obtain a transition advantage.  It was a terrible idea.   About 1/2 of the way through the swim, I began to cramp terribly due to the water temperature.  My heart rate skyrocketed when exiting from the water into the cold temperature.  I had no transition advantage because I was shaking and my hands were completely numb.  In normal conditions, I would finish this race in a MAX time of 1:25.  I finished in 1:39 and won my age group (with a not so impressive overall time).  In the future - learn from me.  Wear the suit.

Does anyone know what happened to the swim that was rescued from the swim and EMS was summoned to the beach?
