I love the bit where they had 5 pacers, spread out in a v formation. Wonder if I could get sub 4 with that type of help.

Wow, big slap in the face to women and the whole controversy about not allowing them to pace off men - but the men can pace off other guys whose sole job is to act as a pacemaker!  Impressive result, but seems like a pretty bad double standard.

I saw the coverage on tv yesterday.  The winner still had legs.  It was impressive.  He had a lot of gas left it looked like.  Running a 4:42/mi pace for 26.2 is just crazy to me.  Really just out there.  Most people can't do 1 lap around the track at that pace.

Paula had a great comeback performance.  She definitely looked fatigued finishing up but watch for her in 2012.  Womens winner has to be the gold favor in 2012 though.  Also has the half marathon record right now.

Useless trivia:  she is also married to the guy (Mutai) who crushed Boston last year.  Talk about a fast couple.

um...I don't think there's a rule against getting 5 women to help pace another woman.  So no real double standard.

Wow, that's just crazy fast ... and that he didn't 'just' run it, but used tactics to drop Gebrselassie with the zigzags, and then having to jump over a sign before the finish?

I also didn't know Boston wasn't a WR-allowed venue.

Net drop in elevation, I believe.

No rule against 5 women pacing another women but it wouldn't make an ounce of difference because this was a MIXED race - totally double standards

Agreed on the double standards- and the new ruling is a step backwards. It's heralded my return to writing editorials.

It is a poorly conceived rule that works in track events, but not road races. Unfortunately, they made the rule broadly applicable and did not designate the difference between the two types of racing.

The purpose of the rule was more related to championship-type races where men and women run separate, to eliminate the use of male pacers for female races. Again, this works in track events, and some of the championship road races, but for most others, especially the marathon, it falls flat.

The women's WR holder remained the same, though. It just changed the time and venue.

Who gives a crap about the pacing rule and double-standards.  The dude ran a 2:03!!!  Are you kidding me?  Maybe his time was effected by the rule, but his level of effort was the same and because of that I say CONGRATS!  Wincing through a long run like that with concentration and your eye on the prize is a HUGE mental accomplishment to go with the physical.  A big CONGRATS to everyone else who finsihed behind this animal.

I just did my first marathon yesterday and ran 4:22:55,,,, so he was just barely fast then me.Laughing If I can cut 2 hours and 20 minutes off my time, I'll be in the hunt.

I am against pacers, but 2:03:38 is still incredible (but still the third fastest marathon time this year)!

I'm hoping that the weather in Chicago is good so that we can see how fast Moses Mosop really is, Moses Mosop ran a 2:03:06 in Boston.  It will also be interesting to see if Hall can break the American Record.

Saw some of the race on TV and it looked fast! Didn't see the finish but interested to read that one of the Pacers held on to finish 2nd!

Didn't think that was allowed, but credit to the guy for sticking with it!

Jonathon and Ross do a good job of talking about the two hour barrier on their blog:

http://www.sportsscientists.com/2011/04/sub-2-hour-marathon-debate....

They also discuss this race in great detail:

http://www.sportsscientists.com/2011/09/berlin-2011-inside-makaus-2...

And, since Boston came up, they discuss that as well:

I think I could pace him for the first quarter mile and keep him from going out too fast!

At Berlin, there has been a long tradition of allowing the pacemakers to finish if they feel fit.
