Subject: how soon after hysterectomy did u run?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone out there has had an open abdominal radical hysterectomy and how long did it take to start running, swimming or biking after? I did Lousville IM so I had been actively training, also just ran 10 miles yesterday as my last run for a while ;-(...surgery is tomorrow...

Any thoughts, ideas, etc is greatly appreciated!

Alicia

I didn't have a hysterectomy per se, but did have my appendix, one ovary and fallopian tube, and bit of my intestine taken out during a uterine ablation gone bad.

I was in the hospital a week and they had me up and walking within days but I walked like I was 110 years old with severe osteoporosis...all hunched over. Sitting up was unbelievable difficult at first. Because I developed an infection in the hospital, my healing took longer but at around 8 weeks I was slowly starting back. Started with cycling at the gym...then some swimming and eventually strengthened my core and abs to run. Our bodies are amazing machines...you'll be up - just take care not to push it too far too fast.

You know it's coming, wait for it:

What's your doctor say?

Otherwise, my wife is an Ob/Gyn as well as an avid runner and triathlete.  I'll ask her what she thinks.

At the time of my hysterectomy (2007), I wasn't nearly as active as I am now - however - it still took me WEEKS to get to where I could even walk long distances comfortably and not look like I was about 170 years old as I shuffled along.

My best advice to you would be to NOT go back to running before you're really, really ready - and then possibly a couple of extra days just to be on the safe side.  I've done more damage to my self than I care to admit by going back to exercise way too early for what my body was ready for.

Oh, and ask your doctor!

How's it going?  My doc said 10-12 weeks for running.....and it was quite a bit longer before I a) felt like it, and b) made it look like a run!!

Hi Velcromom.....well, things got a little hairy after the surgery but I made it! The surgery went well and I was walking 3-4 miles by week 6 with of course no running. However, I ended up needing chemo and radiation so I have not completed treatment (1week ago) and I have actually swam this week and biked a little :-). I am just happy to be out there!Thank you for asking!......Alicia

Hi Linda! Yes :-) I am done woooohooooo. Feeling pretty good all things considered, though I can tell my body has definitely changed, oh well! But I am alive :-). I have started running, biking this weekend and still no swimming. I miss swimming terribly and I think it would do me great as my hips, legs are pretty tight from all the "microwaving" I had..lol...hopefully in the next few weeks I can go back to the water.Thank you for asking. I did sign up for Chicago marathon :-)Alicia
