I loved reading about this - thank you!

I've volunteered at both IM Canada and IMMoo and can tell you that while it's absolutely amazing and a totally inspiring event to be a part of, I don't know that they can compare to the experience at Kona.  Also, thanks for adding this as a MUST DO vacation in the future!

You and your wife body marked me. I was one of the guys who was just ecstatic to be there and drinking in the whole experience. You must have been paying too much attention to me, but Mirinda Carfrae was getting marked about 10 feet away from us at the same time.

Thanks so much for being out there and doing this. All of the volunteers were awesome!

I would love to be at this race some day as a volunteer.

Hey, I totally remember you.  You were the happiest guy we saw that morning!!

and if I do say so myself, your number still looks perfect in your race picture on Ali'i drive.

Yep. Still have the outline of the number sunburned into my arm 12 days later. I am officially 1076 for the rest of my life.

I tried to be as happy and gracious as I could to everyone all day long. Again, thanks to all of you for being out there for this.

Awesome report!

We flew into Kona on the Monday after the race on the last leg of our honeymoon. We really wanted to be there for the race, but it didn't work into our flight plans. Just being in Kona on that Monday was exciting as many of the tents were still up and athletes every where! All week we saw people out running/riding the course. Then, on our flight back to Houston on Friday evening I'm nearly positive that Chrissie Wellington was on our 1st flight to LAX, but I didn't want to get to close to her to make sure and it was dark in the airport.

Wanted to bump this in case anyone missed it. I couldn't see the pics at work due to our Internet security so made sure to read from home.

Excellent post, thanks for sharing.

Just saw this, and thanks for the awesome post. One of my students flew to Hawaii the Friday before the Ironman, and left on Sunday because of a family reunion. He said he had never seen it so packed, but knew something was going on because of the energy. He watched some of the finishers and somehow got a free pair of goggles (don't ask me, but he brought them to school to show off

They were throwing out the goggles to the crowd at the finish line.  It's a great place to get free stuff.    They (TYR) were also handing out the goggles and swim caps in the mornings down at the pier during the week.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the comments, I'm glad you enjoyed the post.    For those of you that say you want to go some day, I say just do it!  Plan ahead and book things early to keep the costs lower (I booked a car in Feb and got 10 days for $300 - if I had booked the same thing in August it would have been $900).

What time did you need to get up to wait in line to register for next year? Laughing
