Shazam - listens to whatever music is playing and tells you who it is and what album.

QR Code Reader - free, will read the square bar codes everyone is starting to use.

AccuWeather - free, 10 day forecast and sunrise and sunset times.

Google - free, app will let you search internet using voice. Although if you have the 4s you probably already have this function.

Skype - free international calls over wifi, and free chat.

AppBox Pro - tons of little apps like a flashlight app and a level. Most usefull app is the period calendar, helps to know when to cut my wife some extra slack.

Yelp - free, reviews, searchs things near you.

Pandora - free internet radio.

Netflix - free, can watch streaming on phone.

NFL '11 - free, scores, schedules, game stats, etc.

Dropbox - store files on your comp wireless.

Runkeeper - free, run stats.

Craigslist - free

RedLaser - free, will scan a barcode in a store and price compare online.

Gas Cubby - free, mileage and cost stats. (depressing)

BT App - free, look at your logs.

Bank App for whatever bank you use.

Cover Orange, Angry Birds and Words with Friends for games.

Trip Tracker - free, load flight info and it will keep you up to date on times and such. Useful for traveling and for picking up visitors.

Countdown - free, countdown months, days, hours, minutes to your next race.

Facebook and Twitter free apps, if you use such things.

Flash

Installing Flash on iOS devices is NOT a project for beginners!

I would also add:
Snooth (if you’re a wine lover). Enter the name of any bottle of wine and it’ll show you places near you where you can buy it. Great for when you have a bottle of wine at a restaurant or on vacation and you want to try to find it at home.

I like the Nike+ GPS app for running, ditto MapMyRide for tracking my bike rides, if you don’t have a Garmin or similar device.

Epicurious for recipes

IMDB is a fun database for movies and actors. You can look up info on any movie or actor and read reviews, synopses, parental guides, trivia & goofs, get famous movie quotes, etc.

CONGRATS!!  I have yet to pay for an App...I see no real reason!  There are so many free ones!

Weather - I use the factory supplied app now that you can look at the hourly forecast...but I also like accuweather

Maps/GPS: I'm not familiar with the 4S maps function, but I don't particularly like to use the maps as a GPS - I prefer to use mapquest mobile - that provides directions as you go.  (free app

White & Yellow Pages (free)

Do you blog?  Free too...

Internet radio - I prefer Slacker (it's free, of course - just need an -free- account)

Flashlight (free- turns on your flash for your camera...)

Also suggest using a calendar app - can sync with your phone and others' calendars.

Books: my library has OverDrive (free) service which allows me to download books straight to my phone.  (audio)  It's much easier to download straight to the phone vs. the transfer from a computer...that's annoying

Games: All free - Mr. Wiener, Siege Hero, Fling, Tap Zoo (I need a neighbor! [email protected])

Shopping: amazon, target, grocery store where I frequent..

Coupons/Savings: Groupon, Entertainment (if you have a book then it's free to use...), LivingSocial

In additional to netflix and hulu plus, I have redbox (which can find the nearest location)...I also have an app that controls my blu-ray player via wi-fi :-P

In addition to using Yelp, I also like urbanspoon

ETA:  hubby suggests endomondo for mapping runs

note to others:  anyone gotten bump to work?  I've been told you can share apps with others...

Get this.  It's one of the few (only?) free apps that does voice turn-based directions to help you while you drive.

Find My Friends (free from Apple) is kinda cool.

For recording GPS tracks, I prefer MotionX GPS... wasn't terribly impressed with the MapMyRide stuff.  MotionX GPS can send out periodic location updates to email / facebook (you set the frequency) -- basically another way to let your friends track where you are.

Strava has their own app for tracking rides / runs, if you're using that site.

OOOH.  Without naming companies....and if you know my DH's don't say it.....I think Concur STINKS.  Lots of issues with it - and I can ALWAYS beat their pricing.
