Overall Rank = 226/378
Age Group = Men 30-34
Age Group Rank = 14/16
Pre-race routine:

Woke up right on time, had a bagel with peanut butter, a banana, and yogurt for breakfast. Drove to Carpinteria from the hotel in Oxnard, approx 30 min. Had to p/u my packet and had plenty of time to get settled, stretch, and walk around the area.
Event warmup:

Swam 250m and ran on the beach for a warm-up
Swim
  • 11m 31s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 18s / 100 meters
Comments:

First 200 started out great, but I think I might have gone out too hard because I slowed considerably toward the end. I wasnt able to keep a consistent pace for the entire length, but the navigation and bouy rounding were top notch!!
What would you do differently?:

Pace myself better next time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 49s
Comments:

Didn't make any mistakes here, but was too slow and methodical. I need to practice these more and work on picking up the pace without making any mistakes.
What would you do differently?:

Practice going faster.
Bike
  • 34m 49s

Comments:

It had been almost two weeks since I had been on the bike due to an ankle sprain so I was not well prepared for this. It took about 1.5 miles or so for my legs to stop burning and get relaxed but once they did I felt pretty good. I did well on the flats on the way out but the hills were rough. I was only able to manage about 10 mph or so on the hills. On the way back the hills were about the same but there was a steep hill that killed me. I was struggling to keep 8mph up it. Then once we got back to the flats and the home stretch I felt great again. I was able to get up to and maintain 24mph on the flat for the entire 3.5 miles until the final turn to home. Overall, this course should have been a piece of cake, but the hills kicked my butt. Also, for some reason I just couldn't get comfortable in the aero position. It seemed like everytime I got down in it I was all bunched up. Not sure why because I didn't used to feel that way, maybe it's time for a little adjustment.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on hills and speed work to improve power and endurance.
Transition 2
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

Not yet comfortable taking my feet out of the shoes and keeping shoes on the bike. Almost fell off the bike at the dismount line. Ran to the rack and started changing. Again, no mistakes here just too slow and methodical.
What would you do differently?:

Again, need to practice these and working on improving speed.
Run
  • 30m 36s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Had to walk twice for 1 min each but ran at a decent pace while I was running.
What would you do differently?:

Will work on improving my running through the off season.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around a bit, had a banana and water. Drove 30 min back to the hotel for a shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, weight, recent injury, endurance

Event comments:

Not much for post race things, but I really liked it anyway. It had a small town sort of feel even though there were nearly 1000 people competing, including the Oly course groups. It is a beautiful area of CA and the Oly course goes through some even more beautiful areas. I think i may do that one next year.
