I've been keeping an eye on this book too. I check Amazon and the author's website every so often. It looks like the info you have is correct for now....

This book has experienced a series of delays, but it will be worth waiting for. I work closely with one of the authors and have heard the other speak several times. This book will be the most comprehansive nutrition book for endurance athletes, covering many new issues.

One thing that Joe taught me about is how diet affects body pH. Most of the foods we eat increase our body acidity (reduce tissue pH) and our workouts - even easy ones - make us more acidic. Choosing foods that increase alkalinity instead of acidity helps improve workout quality and recovery ... as well as helping us feel better all the time. Since talking with Joe bout this issue, I have athletes make 2 small adjustments when they are teetering on the edge of overtraining - use raisins as part of post-workout refueling and include spinach in the evening meal after high-intensity workouts - and have been able to nurse several athletes through some heavy training periods when they seemed to be overtraining.

I recommend this book VERY highly. Ken

I'm also happy to hear you suggest raisins and spinach, these must be the two foods I eat most often.  I hope the book is going to tell me good things about mangoes and blueberries too!

Thank you for the input Ken, I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of the book.

Ken,

Do you know if the book covers how to workout and lose weight? The goal being eatting enought to have quality workouts but cut calories to lose weight. I hope in this off season to focus more on losing weight even if it means worse workouts.

I have done lots of reading on glycemic index and load and it makes sense. Eatting low glycemic food prior to workouts and high glycemic foods during and right after workouts.

I struggle with losing weight. Most books assume if you workout regularly that losing weight isn't an issue. I see chapters on losing weight and on endurance athletes but how to marry the to is a struggle and I haven't seen in the books I've read.  Since I have done tri training my weight has gone up and down around the same area. Before when I didn't work out I lost weight more easily. This seems counterintuitive.

I'm not sure, but my book The Triathlete's Guide to Run Training has an extensive chapter on getting to race weight and I am working on a book called The Athlete's Guide to Losing the Last 10 Pounds. My wife and I have lost a combined 160 pounds and both gone on to win triathlon national championships using these techniques. I focus on keeping the resting metabolic rate high while losing weight and on eating to fuel the muscle cells, but not the fat cells. Timing your eating around your workouts is critical. If interested, my book is available at www.Fitness-Concepts.com

I have your book and am just in the first chapter (along with about 4 other books) but I might skip right to the chapter on nutrition for now.  I'm running my first marathon in November and I'd like to be as light and quick as possible.  I'm very lean but at 5'9" ~165lbs I'm not the ideal marathoner body type.  It'd be nice to drop another 2% body fat before the race.

Feel free to write me at [email protected] with a quick question.

Suggestion on using the book: skip the first two chapters until after the marathon. Now is not the time to learn to incorporate Evolution Running techniques and you'll run worse in the marathin, not better. Right now work on increasing turnover and shortening your stride slightly, but don't alter the biomechanics of footstrike or propulsion until after that race.

Yeah, I'm very comfortable running right now so I wasn't going to mess with my technique this season.  I currently run about 180 foot strikes per min...I think that's about where you suggest folks should be.  On uphills I typically shorten my stride and increase the turnover...similar to "spinning" up hills on the bike.

There's another book out there called the Paleo diet: Lose weight and get Healthy.

I rec'd notice from Amazon that my book was shipped today. So the delay is over...I'm looking forward to reading the book. I also ordered Ken's book and look forward to reading that chapter on losing the last 10 pounds...and hope that one/both of these books can help.

Do you know if any other dried fruits are alkaline, or just raisins? Just curious. I tend to rotate between the raisins, dried apricots, and craisins.

The spinach bit is good news - I have some spinach babies growing in my garden now!

Most dried fruits tend to increase alkalinity instead of acidity, but raisins much more strongly than most. Ken

I'm picking up my copy tonight.  What are other folks' first impressions?  I'm just starting to educate myself about this diet, and would love to hear how trithletes are responding.  What are your favorite recipes?  Did you have a difficult time weaning off carbs and dairy?  Have you seen an uptick in energy?  Love to hear some feedback on this.
