Sunny
Total Time = 1h 47m 29s
Overall Rank = 454/499
Age Group = 20 - 24
Age Group Rank = 22/27
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:45 and took a shower just to help wake up. Had some fresh pineapple and a yogurt smoothie for breakfast. Packed up the car and headed out to the race at 6:30.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 09m 39s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

I went out a little faster than I intended to, so I tried to hold back a bit on the middle 200. It turned out pretty well. I passed a couple of people and got passed by someone who then slowed down. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Try to have better pacing - save more for the end of the swim.
Transition 1
  • 04m 41s
Comments:

The distance from the pool to the transition area was really long. We exited the rear of the building on the opposite side from the transition area. It was cold going out to the transition area! Tried to run to it.

Had a hard time getting socks on, but getting jersey, gloves, etc. was really smooth. I had everything laid out pretty well.
What would you do differently?:

No socks?
Bike
  • 52m 24s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 14.23 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I did pretty well on the bike course. I held back a little at the beginning of the course. I probably could have gone a little bit more at the beginning, but I wasn't sure. I was freezing for the first 8 or so miles. After the big hill, I finally started to warm up.
What would you do differently?:

Wear a long-sleeved jersey. Try to have a more consistent pace throughout the course.
Transition 2
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

Not too much to do here. Racked bike, took off gloves/helmet, had a gel, put on my hat and race belt and went.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have taken off my gloves while I was walking to my rack. Race belt was a little hard to get on since I was safety pinning it together.
Run
  • 38m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

The run went better than I had imagined it. I walked less than I had planned and actually finished faster than I had expected - I've never run this fast before! It was still really really hard and I still don't like running. I was able to sprint across the finish, which felt pretty good.

Big_Ron was waiting about .1 miles from the end and caught me start to walk a little. He actually ran in with me almost to the finish and really kept me going at the end. It was great and I appreciated it a ton.
What would you do differently?:

Train more running.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a lot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was really concerned about not having enough energy left to run. Running is still really hard for me. But, I think that I have more confidence with running now.

Event comments:

This was my first race, so I don't have much to compare it to. I'm pretty proud of myself for finishing and I hope that I'm better prepared for next time.

Yay Jen!  See, I told you that you'd know what to do if you just got yourself next to a body of water!

An experienced triathlete gave me a good tip for socks: put them on your feet once so they've been stretched out already, then fold them back so you just stick your toes into a pocket and pull the rest of the sock on.  I put baby powder in the socks, too.

Good job.  You weren't even DFL.  So your position beats DFL beats DNF beats DNS!

Great job!
The pool was crowded and, you weren't kidding, the run to T1 was long and freezing!
Any more races this year, or are you waiting for the spring?
