Anyone have any suggestions on a good 1st IM race, Florida, Wisconsin, ect. Any help would be great. Shooting for an IM in the 2007 season, but you know how it is, gotta plan ahead if you want to get into these races.
Thanks for any help ahead of time.

Ummm...I can't help you out too much, because I'll be signing up this weekend to do my first IM.  I am picking IM FL, because it's within driving distance for me so I won't have to worry about getting my bike there.  Also, I'm not a strong hill climber and wanted to pick a flat course, even though I might have to battle some wind.  I think picking an IM pretty much depends on how far you're willing to travel and what type of courses you're looking for.  Some are ocean swims, others are lake swims.  Some are double loop courses, others might be out/back.  And also, the climate is another consideration.  YOu might want to venture into the IM forum and view some of those threads as well as peoples' IM race reports to see their comments on their races.  Good luck deciding- it's going to be a good (and tough) experience no matter which race you choose

I was going to say, whatever one you can get registered in, and are willing to travel. With slots filling up in a day, and "qualfying" to get a slot harder and harder, you kind of take what you can get.

My advice is take into account your location, strengths and weaknesses as an athlete, whether your SO will accept it as a "vacation", and how your climate is where you are for training purposes. If you live in the great frozen north an early season IM probably is not a great idea as you will have to train outside during the worst of winter, where as a July or August IM will allow you to do a majority of your training in the spring and early summer. Also, I highly advise doing an Mdot race as your first, I have yet to do or hear of and independant IM that is done right.

Russ:  I was in the same situation months ago.  I researched every 140.6 race I could find.  Thanks to a lot of advice from BT'ers I narrowed down my race selection.  Living in Nebraska where winter lasts until April I had to choose a late season IM.  I'm planning on doing the CheaspeakeMan Ultra (140.6) Triathlon Sept. 30 2006..  Its not hosted by Ironman but that doesn't matter much to me.  The race has been held two years and has gotten great reports.

Good luck reaching your goals.
