It's by no means a complete listing, but trifind.com has started to list the 2006 races: http://www.trifind.net/nf/tx.html#2006-RACES Edited by the bear 2005-11-07 1:02 PM |

Resident Curmudgeon 25290 The Road Back | Subject: RE: Upcoming Race Calendars for Texas? Who's doing Galveston with you Haley? I'm considering it or Gulf Coast as my first HIM. I'm sure you'll do both, but remember I'm old. Any idea if/when it fills up? Is it wetsuit legal/"mandatory"? Edited by the bear 2005-11-07 2:28 PM |

Queen BTich 12411 , | Subject: RE: Upcoming Race Calendars for Texas? Umm...Welshy might do it, I think OldAg is in too. Jeep's out since he's doing AZ but I think he'll be jockstrapping anyway... I'm in for sure. Gulf Coast was awesome, but HUGE, which has pros and cons. G-town is much closer for you. The courses are the same, better chance of a calmer swim in Galveston though, but both really flat. Again, GC is a bigger more experienced race but I'm sure I'll like Galveston just as much. BTW: if I had a bottomless bank account and didn't have to work I'd do both...but I don't plan to be in GA then so that (gulf coast) would be too far to travel. I have some other friends doing Galveston, too, but I heard last year was thoroughly disorganized, insufficient support out on the course, etc. Any indication they'll have their sh*t together this year? |

Queen BTich 12411 , | Subject: RE: Upcoming Race Calendars for Texas? I would assume after all the complaints last year they'll have it together this year. I think it was so bad last year they will have to make it better...I have faith. Oh well, I've done disorganized races before...sigh. |

Pro 4292 Evanston, | Subject: RE: Upcoming Race Calendars for Texas? Some of us are doing the Texas State Triathlon (Oly) at Canyon Lake the week before that. That and other 2006 Seidel Productions are listed here: http://www.seidelproductions.com/index/Events/events_page.htm But if you feel the need to hang out with the cool kids, fine, go to Galveston... best yet, be totally insane and do both! Extreme Veteran 341 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: Upcoming Race Calendars for Texas? Now I can't decide - I grew up in Galveston, so I'm seriously stoked about doing a race there again - it's just that last year I had (in restrospect) a very disorganized, haphazard, race. It was my first race, so I literally didn't know any better. Now - either I do my first Oly there, or I go to Canyon Lake. Hmmm.... Decisions.... |

Veteran 155 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: Upcoming Race Calendars for Texas? I did the sprint in Galveston this past April. A couple of comments: 1) The venue is beautiful. Moody gardens is great, the swim was on the bay side of the island so waves were not a big issue. The water was cold. (64 degrees) The bike course and run course were completely pancake flat. Not even an overpass. It looked like an ideal place and course for a first time. 2) The event was disastrously organized. a) There was another 5K run event setup at the same place and the courses overlapped and the volunteers didn't know where to direct people. They had people finishing their events at the wrong finish lines... b) They ran out of water on the run course. c) The bike course turn around wasn't marked at all. No cone, no volunteer, no police. You just got to a T intersection and were supposed to turn around. I saw people turning both directions at the T, going a bit and then turning around. d) The course map for the bike didn't match the course during the race and there was no run course map available before the race. e) They had lots of traffic mixed in with the bike course. I ended up passing a truck that was stuck behind cyclists. This wasn't a segregated lane or shoulder, cars and cycles were actually mixed together for at least half of the bike course. f) When they had the wave starts for the swim, they had everyone step on the timing map before they went into the water to "register" your chip. It turns out that actually started the timer. For the start you waded into the water and treaded water at the start buoy, then they set the entire wave off all at once. As near as I can tell the start times had random amounts of times added to them up to around 5-8 minutes. In spite of asking them to correct the results with times from my personal HRM they wouldn't do it. And this was not a competitive event. I just wanted the time to be correct. Very, Very, frustrating... I would love to do an event in Galveston in April. The weather was great and the venue is nice. However, if this has the same race director, I don't know whether I can give that guy money again. Maybe someone will talk me into it, but right now I think they were very lucky they didn't have someone hurt last year. Just my 2 cents. Brittain |
