Subject: MDot Tattoo after Iron-distance triathlon ?
Hi !

One of my dreams is to have the MDot tattoed on me after I finish my first Ironman. When I had the Idea, to me, an Ironman was 2.4miles swim, 112miles bike and 26.2miles run no matter it was trademarked or not. I always pictured the reward as the M-dot logo tattoed on me... I soon discovered that MDot was a trademark of the prestigious Ironman Series that we all know...

Here's the question : Would you have the Mdot tattoed on you even if your first Ironman was not in the IM series (eg. Iron-distance triathlons, etc., as long as the distances are the same...) ?

Thanks for you opinions...

Christian.

I wouldn't. Though very personal and it's an idividual thing. I can't stop imagining something like "so which ironman did you do?" You reply, "I did so and so." They say, "Hate to break it to you but that wasn't an 'ironman.'"

I wonder how many people will admit this plunder. I know there's got to be a few.

It all depends on what that symbol means to the wearer.

Some MDot tattoo wearers who didn't do Ironman, but an iron distance race, really don't care that they didn't do an Ironman race. To them the MDot represents the fact that they finished an iron distance race. Although I don't know many who have done that.

Personally, I would never brand myself with a corporate logo. That's how I look at it. OK, I would if I got paid handsomely.

To get a tattoo represents many things to different people. Personally I don't feel that I need to get some "tramp stamp" on my lower back or on my calf or ankle to advertise my accomplishments.

As I understand it, the MDot is a universal, simple enough statement though, to proclaim your bad-assness and once superior level of fitness (hopefully you can maintain at least half of that year-round!), regardless of which brand iron distance race you completed.

I'm sure Ironman LOVES the free advertising from people who didn't do an Ironman race who wear their tattoo. It's free advertising forever!

an iron man to me means completing a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike, and a 26.2 mile run (or shuffle or walk)

Great Floridian Iron Distance completed last month:

This same topic was discussed a few months ago.  The majority of us would get the tattoo, if we were the tattoo type.  The general consensus is that Ironman is the informal name for any 140.6 race.  Velcro vs. hook & loop.  Same thing.

Besides, everything from bathroom scales to weight benches and powder drinks now sport the name and logo of Ironman.  Its so commercialized that its meaning is synonymous for anything 140.6.

Just my view, for me, not what I think of others.  I think the term ironman can be used to say that you are doing or have done an ironman distance (140.6) race.  However, I would not get the m-dot logo tattoo unless I actually did an Ironman (WTC) event.  That is why I chose to do an Ironman event as my first.  Again, just my views, not saying it is worng!

Strange, I thought the consensus was that the "M-Dot" is the corporate brand for specific "Iron-Distance" tris.

Also, the "140.6" has little to no meaning to most people and even most triathletes.  I think that it is only gaining popularity with the marketing of the 70.3 branding.  I think people who complete those should get a  M-Dot/2  tattoo.  Then we can start an entirely new worthless thread on everyones opinion of what kind of HIM tattoo they're allowed to have.

Well, for me... if you finish the distance... you're an Ironman, regardless if it was an Ironman sanctioned event or not.

I was wondering if any of you folks have Triathlete tattoos other than the MDot logo. I'd love to see 'em! I'll start a new thread for Tri-Tats.

I was about to post the same thing. Do it for yourself if you want to. Forget about what anybody else thinks.

I like madcow's philosophy. Hey it's your body, put what you want on it, or nothing at all if that's your feeling. I have plenty of people that have looked at my M-dot tattoo on my arm and have no idea what it is. Maybe they think I work for the Timex watch company?

I am assuming that was a joke   If it wasn't, i would love to hear the reasoning for not branding yourself with a corporate logo...unless it was for a lot of money...

I personally don't differentiate.  To me an Ironman is about the distance...not about whose pockets get lined with my entry fee.  If I race 2.4/112/26.2 then I AM AN IRONMAN regardless of the marketing BS associated with the race.

I've done a few marathons, but I wouldn't put down a tattoo of 26.2 Boston or 26.2 NYC

Unless I actually do them.  So I'm going to have to be satisfied with 26.2 Vancouver, Portland, Las Vegas, Whidby Island

Just my opinion.  Everyone has one.

Ha ha...   the IM was a blizz, I loved it... and the tattoo...   was a little scratch either..  Please do not be confused what it looks like blood is nothing more than leftover ink...  nothing else..

Ha ha... I know, it looks painful but it was not and that is just uncleaned ink....

I got mine after IMFL 3 weeks ago. I'm a tattoo guy with this being my 3rd one.

I could care less what others think. You know what they say about opinions?
