It just depends...you can go nuts and buy everything under the sun, or you can train on the bare minimums for awhile until you decide what you want to do.  I vote for the latter...bare mins to train:

Swim: Goggles and swim suit
Bike: One bike (you have two so you are ahead of the game) and HELMET
Run: Running shoes and some clothes to run in

Start training using the gear you currently have.  I'm sure it will be good enough for several months.  The exception might be running shoes...if you don't have decent running shoes you NEED decent running shoes or you risk injury.  Then stick around, research gear, and decide what you want to upgrade.  You can seriously go crazy and broke buying tri gear.   But you can train with almost anything...

Welcome aboard.  By 2 simple 18 speed bikes, I presume you mean road bikes.  If so, that is more than good enough.  Use the bike that you are more comfortable on and don' worry about the bikes that the pros use .... you are not a pro ... yet!  You have a bike so all you need are goggles for the swim and running shoes for the run portion.  And as for clothing try to wear something that you can wear for all three events.  My first season I simply wore my old cycling shorts and a cycling jersey.

Well, Helmet -- Required attire for virtually every race you enter!

The rules are thus --- No helmet - No race!

As far as other gear- I pretty much agree with everyone else -- Don't go hog wild on gear until you have a better idea what you will like to wear, get a feel for the sport and so on... With the absolute exception being that you need to get to your local RUNNING specialty store, where the staff knows how to properly fit running shoes! That is CRITICAL.

Beyond that, get some googles for swimming (chlorine in the water is NOT fun in the eyes) -- Well, I guess a swim suit of some kind would be a good idea -- most pools kinda frown on skinny dipping!

At some point you'll want to upgrade your gear but take your time... Find out what's comfortable, talk to folks here in BT, and most of all have a great time with your new sport!

This was my first year. I completed 2 sprint tris on a 19 year old Schwinn 12 speed bike wearing soccer shorts and a t-shirt (bike & run). I chose the soccer shorts as they are very comfortable on the run and did the best of all the shorts I owned for drying after the swim. I also had a pair of goggles, but you probably need these for training. Basically, I raced in what I trained in.

Now, I bought a couple pair of tri shorts and will probably get a tri top so I don't have to put on a shirt in T1.

Even if you don't like wearing a helmet, they are required for races, so you may as well train in one to get used to it.

Make sure you go to a running store (NOT a sporting goods store) and get fitted for shoes. Other than that, you can basically wear anything.

I have found the C9 by Champion gear at Target is decent stuff and quite cheap.

You probably won't fall off the bike until some stupid kid in a mustang tries to scare you by driving too close and throwing his McDonald's cup out the window while screaming something obscene and either
1. Actually hits you
2. Hits you in the face with the cup and you fall anyways
3. Misses you but scares the crap out of you, causing you to fall anyways.

wear a helmet, save your brain.

If it feels like it's going to fall off then it doesn't fit you right. Might go to a bike shop and ask them to fit it for you or consider a new one. If you definatly are serious about this, then you may consider buying a good helemt. I have a giro pnumeo (near $100 when I got it) and I almost forget I'm wearing it. Worth every penny.

Also realize riding a bike and training on a bike are different. You will probably be on the bike more, meaning more opertunity to fall. You will also find the more you ride, the faster you will become. I used to race and have eaten asphalt at over 40 mph. It's not fun. You may think you will never see those speeds, but start hill training and I guarentee you will.

Get a helmet!  If you fall, you crack your helmet and not your head!  Nuff said....

Uh, because there aren't many tris (none that I know of) that let you race without one.
